Audio HELP EDUCATE ME !

Okay I''ll be blunt due to my aagrivation, I'm FED UP with attempting to educate myself on audio through forums and videos, no one succeeds in explaining clearly enough the questions I need to be answered, So Iv'e decided to ask some questions specifically on a forum in hopes for proper solid info...

So my questions are mainly about hooking up speaker systems invlolving amps speakers woofers etc. keeping in mind iv'e been a bedroom DJ for quite some time now

So I understand that when building a PA system, you cannot connect active powered speakers with an amp , seeing as though active speakers already have an amp in them, nor can you connect a woofer, (at least thats what I thought until i came across articles that conflicted with each other)...
So is it true you can connect a PASSIVE woofer or amp to active speakers ? And if so, is it true you would need a crossover of some sort in order to do so, so you dont blow anything out ? Or am I off base completely, if so EDUCATE ME PLEASE !!

Another question I had was that I am confused as to the spcifications sheet on my M-Audio Bx 5a monitors, (just my cheapies I use for my studio at home) The specs sheet says these guys have 10k-20k ohms...how does this make sense at all, I was sure that ohm ratings ranged between 2-16 impedance loads, what on EARTH are they talking about kiloohms for???

Thanks in advance and any help would be very much appreciated and put to great use      : )

That figure sounds like the input impedance for the monitors, which, I gather, are "active" in that they have amps built in.

I think your confusion is between passive speakers, which require a speaker amp, and active speakers, which require a line-level signal, such as used for connecting components. I don't believe it is any different when talking about regular speakers or subwoofers.

All the subwoofers I know about are active, in that they take a line-level signal and have an amp built in. Mind you, I've never owned or shopped for one, so I'll leave it up to someone with experience to answer you about those in greater detail.

I see thank you for the reply! So with this being said, subwoofers as you believe all seem to have amps built in them, so does this mean I will not need an amp to power a pair of passive speaker if, instead of an amp, I buy a woofer that would work with the speeakers ?

The hi-fi set-ups I've seen had a power amp or integrated amp powering regular passive hi-fi speakers, than a single line-level cable from the pre-amp or integrated amp to the subwoofer, which is active (has its own amp).

However, I have seen cheapie surround systems where the power amp for all the speakers was in the subwoofer box. I don't call this stuff "hi-fi".

Studio and PA gear works differently you daisy chain it together, active subs have pass thrus for the low level signal and built in crossovers, for example soundcard > active sub > speaker amp.
