Every person is different. Some have had excellent results with just a closed mouth impression. Some (like me) need a really wide open impression. You won't really know until you try it for yourself.

Two inches is what is usually recommended; but, as project86 stated, everyone's at least a little different. Some people even prefer to keep their jaw relaxed, same as it is when they listen to music. My own block was 1.75in, because that's what I had at hand (i.e. my phone) and I wanted to be able to speak without losing seal.

Hi Kunlun, from your review you said that the 8.A has a lush midrange. In your oponion, how do you think it compare to the SE535 midrange. Thanks

Ok, the visit to the audiologist wasn't so bad afterall.

No pain whatsoever so I'm guessing all went well.

Didn't have a chance to check the impressions cause the audiologist packed and sealed them right after, so I shipped it out in that condition.

Now the long agonizing wait begins..

Hi Leo, I haven't heard the SE535. Ask Project86 or kckc about a direct comparison.

Part of the 8.A is how the lush midrange is complemented by the smooth treble and excellent, copious bass.

Thanks Kunlun. Project86 and kckc, could you guys kindly provide me some feedbacks for me to work on.

Have also audition a demo universal Merlin and found that the the sub bass is just a little too much for me in terms of weight and size. I've read somewhere that the 8.A is more mid bass thus can i assumed that the sub bass would be slighty lesser in weight and size as compared to the Merlin.

Thanks in advance.

I think there's a wide range of comfort levels when getting ear impressions.

My first one was mildly uncomfortable when the audiologist pushed the cotton thing past the 2nd bend.

My second one was pretty darn uncomfortable on the left side when he went past the 2nd bend.

Hmmm.... sorry, but I haven't heard the SE535, and it has been ages since I sold my SE530. So I'm not really confident comparing them.

As far as the Merlin, yes the 8.A has a little less sub bass and a bit more mid-bass. Not enough to be overbearing or bloated sounding by any means. But if that's your thing and the Merlin didn't do it for you, 8,A is the obvious choice compared to the other customs I've heard.

Did you pay any taxes/tariffs for this? If so, mind disclosing how much?

Thanks Project86 for chipping in, appreciate that. Maybe, i would probably wait for kckc or other folks here and see what's their views on this. Would really appreciate anyone who think that they can help to chip in. Thanks in advance.

My apologies for the no response, I've been busy and haven't had much time for head-fi. I don't own the SE535 and actually went out to a store today I know that has them available for demo, however they were closed so unfortunately I was unable to do a direct comparison. Like Project, I'm not confident in comparing the two especially because I never owned them, only a brief demo in store. From memory, the SE535's midrange is more forward than the 8.A but both have lush mids with the 8.A being fuller. The SE535 has less bass than the 8.A and I do feel that the 8.A is also a tad warmer overall. Take my impressions of the SE535 with a pinch of salt. Project is spot on in his comparison between the Merlin and 8.A though and if you think the Merlin has too much sub bass, I think you'll really love the 8.A.

Agreed. Even with so little time to listen to my CIEMs lately, I find myself almost always going for the 8.A over the Merlin the majority of the time.
