Where/how do you buy your new headphones?

Do you buy in-store or online?

Independent audio stores are becoming endangered species, and basically the only other stores you can go into and test out new headphones are big-chain retailers, which have a very limited selection. For me, headphones are something I need to test out in person and see how they fit/sound. I wouldn't buy them online without wearing them first, even if I could return them for free. It's just too much of a hassle.

Where do you all find/test your new headphones?

Online, of course! Like what you said, big-chain retailers have a very limited selection, and where I live you cannot return headphones if you've opened their packaging. The smaller brick-and-mortar stores do have headphones to test but they're way beyond most people's budgets. Testing out headphones is a luxury these days. Driving to these stores is also a drain on gas.

Compare that to the vast selection of headphones bought online from websites that protect sellers and buyers alike and have a sensible return policy. I'd take that anyday over the big box stores or the mom-and-pop stores.

I've found a couple of stores that sell nice headphones, but that is rare. If they do carry them (Senns, AKG, AT, etc), they carry a very limited spectrum of what the company actually offers. I can't bring myself to buy headphones online if I can't test them first. Waiting to get them and having to pay to return them if I don't like them is too much of a hassle.
