Is the ATH 700 neutral? - Page 2

I'm glad you know about the amazing human being, Carl Sagan! He truly was a remarkable man. May the cosmos watch over him!

OP:  I consider the 8400s to be hi-fidelity; that is, I think they make music sound like music, not a reproduced sound file.  Very realistic drum reproduction.  From what I remember about the A700s, they had a bit of a canned sound to them.

Yeah man, I can definitely tell you my thoughts on them! I have literally had them for a day now. :P By the way, Carl Sagan was a brilliant man. I'm glad to see him in your avatar.

Are you a (former) student?

Oh, hey, yeah! Sorry! Hahahahaha. You're not being annoying at all. You have a perfectly valid point! :)

Glad you like them! Have you noticed any genres where they really seem to shine?

Unfortunately, I can't say that I was a former student of his, if that's what you meant. I am a student though, a senior in High School at the moment. I started learning about his work a couple of months ago and have started to watch his "Cosmos" series. Really insightful and I've actually started to really think about things in a different light.

I totally agree with this actually. Oddly enough though, one thing they were really good at was portraying acoustic bass. I don't know what it is, but neither of my current headphones are able to match it, even though neither have weak bass and are supposed to be in a higher performance bracket. Even though they were pretty flawed in other areas imo, that one instrument was for some reason amazing on the A700. I definitely plan on picking up some A900x in the future.

And yeah, Carl Sagan is my hero. Still metaphorically tearing up.

I was asking if you were a student in general. Yeah, it's good that you are opening your mind. People like Carl Sagan have made such significant contributions to the intellectual/academic community.

Well, I'm not really sure if they shine with any particular genre. They are a pretty flat headphone. They are made to be reference headphones. Ideally, they don't add anything to the music. You are just to hear what was recorded. Of course, they aren't perfect in this regard (spend ten thousand dollars and maybe you can get that) but they are certainly very flat.

My attitude is that they should shine with almost everything. When music is recorded the engineer uses flat gear. So shouldn't we be using flat gear to listen to what was mixed? The only exception I can think of is cheap pop, dance, techno, etc. Reason being that I generally (but not always) take these genres less seriously. They are just ear candy and being so I can mould them to whatever I desire.

But if I'm listening to other genres I prefer a flat sound. I see you listen to Opeth. What other music are you into? I also listen to a lot of metal and hard rock (Emperor, Devin Townsend, Meshuggah, Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Nirvana, Decapitated, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Arcturus... the list goes on).

Apparently the KRK are a bit bass light but I personally love how lean the bass sounds. It doesn't carry much of any impact but it is so articulate and lean. I find these headphones to be really crisp sounding. But bear in mind I've had them for a day.
