New to forum: seeking best bang for the buck DAP/headphone combo

New to this forum, I've been enjoying reading and learning about this stuff and I'm getting sucked into this world I think.

Listen to mostly jazz/acoustic+electric rock/classical

wifi access not necessary, just looking for good sound quality that i can afford.

iem/over the ear cans are fine - no preference.

storage is of course important - the more the better with flac, right?

I've read good things about Cowon, but it seems a lot of people use a Sanza with a headphone amp and good headphones...this may be the way to go for me with my price range.

I don't know if the lower end headphone amps are worth it or not...like everyone else on here, I just want great sound in my head.

If anybody can direct me the proper thread or has recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

What price range are you looking for?

For cheap - Clip+ rockboxed with 16Gb MicroSD card and Meelectronice headphones - A151?  Total price of about $100.

I own this combo and its pretty good.  If your starting out I wouldn't necessarily get into Amps until you have a firmer grasp on what it is you want.  This is a great place to read a lot about the products.  Just take everything with a grain of salt.

Good hunting

The Cowon X7+RE0 or Etymotic HF5, M4 willbe great combo for these genres music. Few others DAPs like Philips go gear, Samsung P3 and HiSound Audio V are also recommended.

The 801 is great, depending on your budget though.

I'm looking to spend about 300 bucks. I had a ipod 4 with some knock off iems, and i thought the sound was decent, but i don't have anything to compare it to. needless to say, the ipod was stolen, but i still have the iems, which i think are a bit better than the stock earbuds that come with the ipods these days. i want a setup that costs about the same as the 32gb ipod 4 that i bought, but blows it away in terms of sound quality. i'm leaning towards a sanza clip+ rockboxd/Fiio E11/grado iGi iems (not sure if an amp would help these...) Any thoughts on using an amp with these grados?

Correct, the 801 is by HiFiMan. You could also go with the 601 or 602 if you wanted a DAC for the computer. Something like the 602 is more manageable with you $300 budget and is a well know unit for the money. The iPod Classic 120gb or 80gb (i own) is also a great player and have very user friendly controls to upload music, etc; as your familiar with.

Cowon J3 seems to be a popular choice here.
