Low Impedance Headphone Amp?

Thread Starter

Hey everyone i just got me a set of Audio Technica ATH-M50s. Great cans and I LOVE them. I feel like they could be driven more on my ipod so i was looking into some portable headphone amps and specifically at the Fiio E11. Somebody said their M-50s sound wasnt changed much because it was Low Impedance. Can somebody please explain to me what that means? Also, What are your suggestions for Low Impedance portable headphone amps for under $125? No higher please. Thank you all very much!

If you look at the impedance vs frequency plot of the ATH-M50 at http://www.headphone.com/headphones/audio-technica-ath-m50.php it doesn't seem to vary much with frequency, which means the output impedance of the amp won't have a large affect on the tone. (it may still have some affect)  I have also read that the iPod has quite a low output impedance anyway, which I guess is what that person was trying to explain to you. So, perhaps only get an amp if it's not loud enough, or if you want a bass boost function etc etc.

Greg.
