Good Open Headphone under 400 dollars

Hey Everyone, I recently bought Sennheiser HD-25 1 II's and I love them, but I'm wondering what the next step is. If I get another pair of headphones I want a nice mid-fi open headphone like a Senn 600/650, an AKG K701 or other options like these. I'm looking for something different than a HD-25 to have a variety of different sounding cans.

What type of amp do you have?

Musical preferences for this elusive second open can of yours would be?

I've been looking at amps, but don't have one yet. The HD-25's don't need an amp but if anyone has a suggestion that would work for both the HD 25s and most mid-fi open cans I would love the feedback.

My musical preference is split between a lot of electronic/dubstep and alternative/classic rock. I love the bass in the HD 25s for my electronic side but I'm sure an open headphone would make other music sound better with its superior sound stage.

the 650's or ultrasone 2900

Ultrasone Pro 2900

we got 2 for the 2900 :)

Sennheiser HD650 with amp should fit into your budget. That's probably the best choice in terms of fidelity, and I personally love the HD650 sound signature.

go test out the HF650 and Ultrasone 2900 and see whcih one you like. guitar center might let you. if you can't test them at a store or with friends....then..reviews are the only way :/

Thanks for the advice everyone, one more question. Is there an amp (it would be nice if it was also a DAC) that would work for both the HD 25 and a Senn 650 or Ultrasone 2900?

what's your price range?

Whatever it is, The E17 $150 is for you. it is not out yet, but it is fantastic. It is a combonation of the E7,E11,and E10 all in one package.

i don't know how well it will drive the HD650 or pro 2900's though. It has 215mW @ 32Ohms which is pretty good. The 2900's are only 40 Ohm but the low 96 dB which is more important leaves me wondering. it should do very well though still

Suggesting unreleased gear is not something I'm a fan of doing. The Fiio E9 will work fine for either headphone, and the 25's (and most dynamic headphones for that matter). If you'd like to spend more, the CIA VHP-2 is not a bad choice, above that you're getting exotic - Woo, Grace, Benchmark, and so on are all worth considering.

As far as what headphone to get - I like the Sennheiser HD 600/650 suggestion, I also like the AKG K701, but you may find the bass impact lacking (if you want a lot of "boom" you won't get it, if you want accuracy and detail, you will get that). The Sony MDR-SA5000 may also be a good consideration - I'm not the biggest fan, but it's noteworthy alongside the AKG and Sennheiser models. I would not consider any of these "mid-fi" (and I would not bother discussing it further, or worrying about what is "mid-fi" or "hi-fi" or "low-fi" in general; as the French say: les goûts et les couleurs…).

i just realized. we haven't asked if the thread starter needs the amp to be portable/desktop or both.

Desktop amp is fine for this purpose, I was thinking about picking up a portable before but with open headphones I'm not going to be using them on the go a lot for obvious reasons like too much sound leakage.
