Hello!

I just recently got my Asus Xonar Essence ST and I must say that I'm impressed! The built-in amp really helped push my PC350's and it was quite and upgrade over the SB Titanium X-Fi fatal1ty! Here's my question though, I see the HD598 on Amazon for only $173 and I'm still with the return period for my PC350. Gaming is a my no.1 priority while at the same time I love music too, metal mostly along with some house electronica. I play mostly FPS religiously and RPG's. Does the sound card benefit the PC350's to the point where I wouldn't notice a difference from the HD598 seeing as how their impedance is lower than that of the PC350's?

Thanks for any replies and input!

What kind of metal? I'm really liking the q701s which are a bit more than what you mentioned but you might want to try those instead. I think the pc350 is the same or similar to the 598 except without a mic...

Considering the PC350 is inferior to the PC360, and the HD598 is superior to the PC360, I would say the HD598 would be a giant leap in SQ over the PC350.

People REALLY need to stop saying the HD598 is the same as ANYTHING older that Senn has made. The PC360 sounds nothing like the HD598 other than soundstage.

The PC360 sound well balanced and warm. The HD598 leans on being slightly bright, but rich in mids, and ever so slightly treble emphasized.

The PC350 is a closed headset, and would sound quite different from either of those.

My question though is would the HD598 benefit greatly from my new sound card or did I waste $200? I noticed their impedance is only 50ohms whereas the PC350's is 150ohms.

Your soundcard has Dolby Headphone, which works wonderfully with the HD598 for gaming.

The 598's have a funny resistance curve (A lot of Sennheiser headphones do) so the STX's amp would help with them as well.

I see! So would I apply the high gain setting to it? Normal gain 0 db 0-64 ohms, High gain 12 db 64-300ohms. Are the HD598's just really that much better? If so I'm going to go and return the PC350's tomorrow and order the 598's.

To Danthrax, I listen to all types of metal, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, BLS, Ozzy, Dimmu, Gwar, Rammstein ect.

If you like the sennheiser sound I would go with them. But if you are looking for something new maybe these http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-Open-Studio-Headphones-Ohms/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1325316007&sr=8-3 They are supposed to be real good for metal. I listen to a lot of tech death so I went with the AKGs myself, and I don't have a lot of experience with sennheiser but mad certainly has the most experience with gaming and headphones than anyone so I would listen to his advice first.

Unfortunately my head is rather large! Size 8 hat! I'm actually thinking of possibly getting the HD600! How would that do with my Essence ST? Would it drive them properly?

A giant can wear the PC360 or HD598 with no problem. They extend to watermelon head size.

Haha!

I've got a slightly bigger budget now. $350 max. Considering the HD650's, 600's, K702's. What do you recommend? I'm big into gaming and also listen to a lot of metal, rock, electronica.

Metal, rock, and electronica? I wouldn't ever use any of these Sennheisers for that. I'd go with my DT990 for gaming and those genres, which are my fave genres as well. The Senns are too analytical/boring for that sort of music. The K701 as well.

Really? The 250ohm or 600ohm version? Would it fit my big head? I was also looking at the HD650s smily_headphones1.gif

Not sure, you'd probably have to fully extend the Beyers. Haven't heard the HD650, but the fact that everyone calls them laid back and smooth, that is an immediate turn off for me.
