Am I spoiling it by skipping to the end?

So I currently have the TF10 after owning a few other universals. The triples are my favorite at this point and I think I have become pretty good at identifying and explaining sound, much better than I am at explaining why any of this matters to a normal person, anyways ...Which has been very enjoyable so far, if not costly. I have another pair of TF10 being custom molded with a slight sound signature change currently being done by Kozee, mostly to see if customs are something I want to pursue in my future.

At this point, I think I'm done fiddling around with universals and experiencing different sounds. Would I be ruining the fun if I just jumped right in and went for top tier customs, without climbing the ladder up? I am about %90 sure I want JH16s as it seems somewhat similar in sound to the TF10 but I definitely have more research to do. I am also pretty sure that would be the end of the road for me. I feel like I'm doing this wrong. Would you wait and take more time to appreciate more sounds first?

Well it's never really the end of the road; you often see people here with more than one custom. Taste preferences change over time and so does music preference.

Definitely if you can afford it. It's much more difficult to go up the ladder sort of speaking with customs due to poor resale value, time constraints, and cost.

Since I have zero interest in full sized headphones, I have pretty reached the end of the line with my Starkey SA-43s, which you should definitely also consider if you are looking into customs since it has essentially 4 different sound signatures.

Depends on if you will ever visit this forum again. If not, then yeah, you can skip to the end. But as long as you keep checking here, you are bound to come across new product news, a convincing review, and an itch and curiousity to test drive. And the cycle continues. I though I had myself capped with westone 2 and triple fi 10, seemed like it for awhile, and then i checked out the deals thread and have gotten a couple more. Even with customs, theres always a new model coming out, more and more drivers, more custom options like paint jobs and the like, etc. And as Ulti mentioned, your personal tastes and music could change which will be another huge factor in determing whether you will invest more money into this hobby. Its a personal commitment, don't say this will be the last because this is going to be the best headphone i will ever need, you gotta be more like this is going to be the last because i say so.

Thanks for the perspective guys. I'm kinda just considering a divorce but I know I will be left feeling sooo unsatisfied. The Starkey custom is very interesting I must say. Shipping overseas may bring me great anxiety though.

If you've got the money to get a top-tier custom, I say go for it. No need to "experiment" with customs as you should have done that with universals and customs are much more expensive with low resell value. With that said, I do have a couple CIEMs myself but that's just what head-fi does to you. It's never really the end of the road until you stop coming on the forum because something new will always show up.

Seeing as you have the kozee reshell underway, why not wait and see how that pans out first?  No point spending $$$ and then finding you don't like customs after all.
