I have been a long time reader of head-fi and went through a series of ~$100 IEMS after reading various threads. My first decent pair of IEMs were the Shure EC2s. I thought they were alright but I have unfortunately small ears so they would not stay in my ears (and I hadn't yet discovered comply tips). I replaced them with the Westone UM1s after reading about them here. I absolutely loved them and discovered the amazing fit and comfort of comply tips for the first time. Unfortunately they were stolen and I decided to try a new model so I got the UE SuperFi 5vis. They were alright, but lacked some of the clarity and treble that the UM1s really excelled at. After a few months, the left monitor became quieter than the right (a common problem apparently) and I sweet talked the UE sales rep into sending me UE 700s as a replacement. I found them to be significantly better than the SuperFi 5vis but still missed my UM1s. I recently decided it was time to upgrade again. Part of that decision was due to the fact that I got Logitech Z-2300s and fell in love with them. They blow anything I had out of the water (including my Audio Technica A-700s). I read tons of threads about $200-300 IEMs and settled on the Westone UM2s because I loved my UM1s and wanted something even better.
So my UM2s came the other day and I want to like them so badly. I thought my UM1s were incredible when I had them. However, I don't know if it is due to my more discriminating ears, the fact that I got used to the bass heavy Logitech speakers, or something else but I find the Westones to sound extremely flat. Don't get me wrong, the sound reproduction sounds very accurate and the instrumentation separation is superb but they don't have that wow factor and punchy bass that I'm used to now and I get this nagging feeling every time I use them that I just wish they were a little better... I have come to trust these forums a lot and I would really like to know what you guys think. Am I crazy? Should I return them and try out something different? Have I begun an endless, money burning spiral that is the audiophiles dilema? Thanks in advance!
