Best Closed Heaphones for Under $300

I have a pair of 595's which I like well enough. I use them for music and for gaming and they are good for both. The problem is that I travel very frequently and I want something closed. He doesn't necessary have to isolate sound I just do not want any sound leakage.

I like the Senns but sometimes I don't think they are as clear as they could be and for a lot of songs the vocals sound like they are very far away. They also give me a headache pretty fast and I feel the sound is quite harsh.

Any reccomendations would be great, I have looked at Denon's and Beyerdynamic.

Thanks!!

You could save yourself some money to invest in a great amp and/or DAC by buying a Fischer Audio FA-003. Their mids are ultra-smooth and vocals are great, and they're really comfortable. Being neutral they don't over-accentuate any frequency range, making them great for all genres. The bass is strong and punchy, especially for a neutral phone, and instrument separation is great. LFF said it best when he said he wouldn't be surprised if they costed $600.

I say look into the Ultrasones. They sound great & have a big sound stage. Hfi-780 for best isolation but can get a little uncomfortable. Pro 900 for good isolation, a little more bass, and more comfortable.

The 990s are open and leak massively.  Nice cans, though.  The 770s are closed and have good isolation and now leakage.

+1 for noting that it is open. This is why we are ranked.

The 780's also get a +1 for being 50% of the cost of a Pro 900:)

Get the HFI 780 if you like vocal and highs more, with a strong bass presnce that won't get muddy

Get the HFI 580 if you like vocal and highs with great audiophile bass that also won't get muddy. This is a more bassy one

The HFI 580 already has great vocals and highs, the 780 just takes it a bit further

Cans don't have to be expensive to be good.

Pro 900-$350 (needs amp; add $150 to cost of ownsership)

HFI 780-$158 (doesn't need amp but could benefit greatly from one) 50% of 900 cost and still recommended

HFI 580-$118 (doesn't need amp but could benefit greatly from one) 33.3% of 900 cost and still recommended by us

recommended amps for the HFI series:

FiiO E6 $25

FiiO E11 $65

FiiO E17 (soon to be released) $150 ; this is also recommended for the Pro series.

all of them are very recommended. It really depends on what you are doing. The E6 if you just need an amp. the E11 if you need a good amp. The E17 ifyou want thewhole banging package.

Im kind of leaning toward the dt 770 or the denon d2000. The ultrasones sound good but some people are saying they are either uncomfortable and Im not sure what is S-Logic?

Also are these headphones a big step up from the hd 595. I will probably use them unamped or with a Fiio E11.

One more thing with the 770s would I get the 80ohm or 250ohm?

Don't forget the 32 ohm ones, too.  Some say the 32 ohms are better than the 80 and 250 ohms.

It all comes down to your amplification source.  Dedicated amp?  Then 250 or 600 ohm.  Small, portable electronics or computer sound card, 32 ohm all the way.

Beyer calls it "semi-open"; consider it an open phone.

Denon AH-D1100, $107 at Electronics Expo, need to use the coupon code "BOUNTII".

Beyerdynamic DT series in 32-Ohm are called "Premium" models, they cost more then the "Pros" (80-Ohm, 250-Ohm).

For the price of the 32-Ohm Premium, you can get the Pro 250-Ohm and a portable headphone amplifier.
