question about soundcard

Thread Starter

so i just got my xonar essence and q701 in the mail today

and in the soundcard drivers u can choose the gain level

default is 0db for <64ohms

which is alright for music and stuff but when im watchin a movie with my bluray drive its not loud enough.

so i was wondering if i could raise the level but if i do the next level of ohms is +12db for 64~300

that makes it loud enough for sure.

here is a pic of it kinda

this increases the power put out to the headphones, i am worried this could damage the headphones.

can anyone tell me if it can or if it doesnt matter. its only a 2 ohms difference

that doesnt answer my question lol. I have my stuff turned up all the way and its still not very loud at all. its probably the program i use but there arent many blu ray player programs that i know of anyways.

That is kind of weird that you have the sound all the way up on the STX I have a DX and run the sound at 50% and it's at a good level. Its probably the blu ray program... you might as well try increasing it or you could try playing the blu ray through VLC media player.

The AKG Q701 are only 62-Ohm, but I believe they are a little hard to drive then normal, so leave it at 64~300.

Have you e-mailed AKG, ask them.

Also while watch movies, try switching the Audio Channel to 6 and enable Dolby Headphone, see if that improves the sound.

I think the rule of thumb is set the gain higher if the volume is not high enough. Depending on the kinds of music you listen to they may be inherently "loud." That said the only damage I can think of that could occur is if your movie is very quite and then all of a sudden gets extremely loud; I wouldn't worry about it.

well i actually came across something with  these headphones and soundcard. So i may be sending them back and trying another pair or the same ones again. I emailed AKG, ill copy the email here and see if u guys know anything.

Hello i ordered your AKG Q701 headphones the other day. And i seem to be having issues but I'm not sure if its the headphones or my sound card or the two not mixing well together.

I have the Asus Xonar Essence ST which has a amp built in as you probably know.

I have done a few test to try and figure it out but im not sure, which is why i am contacting you guys.

Well here is my problem, i dont know how to explain it very good, but it seems like sound kinda jumps around. Like something doesn't sound right. It doesnt do it all the time just certain parts of songs and games.

I took one song i knew exactly when it did it and was very noticeable. I listened and i heard it every time, it wasn't random. I listened to it on a cd, a lossless rip, and on youtube. It did it for all types. Then i plugged my old headphones (sennheiser HD555) in and the problem did not occur. So then i took the q701 out to the receiver in the living room and put the cd in and listened and it did not happen.

so im not sure what is causing this. Because the q701 is the only headphones that are doing it with my soundcard. the sennheiser hd555 and also my dad has some sennheiser hd280's and those didnt do it either.

i am not looking to just send these back and get my money back, i love the way the headphones sound other then this. Im not sure if the headphones are defective or they just dont like my sound card.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
