Why the hate for the HD280?

I stumbled onto some of these at the Galleria Best Buy in Houston in the Musical Instruments section, and considering I work at Magnolia HT, I purchased them for $60 on our discount because these are the "legendary" Sennheisers. Now, look, I don't do much browsing on here because there's such an elitist tone around here, but I figured that people would be in love with the HD280s.

So, my question is...why is there hate for the 280s?  They do clamp a bit hard, for the isolation.  Yet, I have the world's largest head and I can rarely find headphones that fit my head.  Literally, most headphones I buy don't fit or are about as far extended as they come.  The 280s fit perfectly and while yeah, they do clamp, a little stretching for a few days on some books eliminates the clamp while keeping the isolation.  I don't care what people say; they're quite comfortable.

And, I figured a totally neutral headphone like these would also be enjoyed by "audiophiles", but no, most people have gotten angry whenever anyone brings them up.  I really don't care-I like them-but I'm curious as to where the hate comes from.  Playing 320kbps MP3s on my uDAC2 sounds pretty freaking incredible...there are a few NIN songs on the Ghosts album that rape any stereo system (yeah, it makes Grados clip) and hooked up to the amp, the song doesn't clip and the bass impacts amazingly.

So, just curious...what's your take?  Why the hate?

Mostly, I didn't find them very neutral, and at the price point they fall in, there is a lot of competition I prefer. It's not hate, it's more ambivalence. I think there are better headphones in the same category for the same dosh (AKG 240, KRK 6400, Shure 440, Sony V6).

If you like 'em. Rock 'em. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

I really, really, really don't like Shure's sound signature.  And I have had really bad experiences with Sony headphones. I mean, I don't care, just was curious because I didn't understand why so many people disliked them.

I've not seen the hate... *shrug*

Maybe write up a nice long review about your experiences with them - maybe you'll convince a few people, and they'll be next years M50. :D

I've listened to a friends pair, and they weren't bad at all nothing astonishing but they sound good enough.  Like the other guy said, they have some tough competition for their price.

Also im not one to take notice to asthetics, but they are ugly as sin if i may say so myself.
