any ideas? i'm looking for my dad. open or closed is fine, must be decently comfortable at least (no grados LOL). and must be relatively low-impedance as he will be using them un-amped

Audio Technica AD700, Sennheiser HD448, or the older HD555 (if you can find it new for less than $100..) are good choices to start.

I also really enjoy the Denon D1100, although it does color the sound, it makes classical music sound very lush (after bumping the mids a bit). Electronics Expo has these for $108 shipped after a code.

And...one more! For a much lower price, the AKG K430 are a good choice too. These are on-ear headphones, but still very comfortable.

Shure SRH 440

Sennheiser HD 280 Pro

both are extremely neutral and easy to drive. Comfort is about decent for both of them. 2Hours tops each.

While the 280 appears relatively easy to drive, it wasn't until I amped it that the bass truly came alive. No such issues with the 440s though

i've heard D1100s and they're too bassy for my dad i think. he'll want something with a more neutral presentation.

hd448's look good. he will like the sennheiser sound. and they're closed and apparently offer decent isolation, which is a bonus for him. the 555s are just out of the price range i think.

K142HD $120USD Amazon, it might need a small amount help from something like a Fiio E5

 down the track ($20USD)

Supremely comfortable, semi open and simply made for those genres.

he did say that it needed to be unamped.

so yes. think about the 440 and HD 280 pro's. They are both basically similar.
