Xonar DG sound card + ATH-M50s...what settings should I use?

Sorry, this is my first dedicated sound card. There's a bunch of settings to play around with and I don't know which settings to pick to make it sound best through my M50s. Can anyone help me from experience?

Sample rate?

Analog out?

SPDIF Out?

7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter?

Dolby Headphone?

Flexbass?

Acoustic Echo Cancellation?

Do I want to enable any of these things? Some of them only? Which ones?

Thanks

well sample rate you want at 48 at the lowest as it caters for most recordings - however most people just wack it up to 96 KHz

analogue out - well it depends what your playing out from ie whats pluged into where - front panel lineouts or headphone jack etc. my essesnce st is obv on headphone.

spdif out - unticked unless your using a optical out.

and then the checkboxes below - depend on what your using - music, film game etc - play with them to get the best results for YOU

dolbyheadphone - setting 2 is very good tho - the others dolby pro loigc and 7.1 shifter. are really for gaming.

I don't like how on some songs, the vocals sound like I'm listening to them through underwater.  The instruments and bass all sound good but the vocals just sound...I dunno how to explain it...like I'm underwater or something. Is there any way to bring the vocals forward and make them more pronounced?

Most audio is 44.1 kHz.

You want the channels set to 2, sample rate set to whatever your files are (usually 44.1), analog out set to Headphones, SPDIF disabled, all other features under it disabled for music listening, and HF mode enabled on the right just to make sure everything's turned off. For games and movies, enable Dolby Headphone (I don't use the virtual speaker thing), set the sample rate to whatever the audio is (or just leave it at 44.1), and the number of speakers to whatever you can set the movie or game to use.

If this problem is exclusive to the DG, you have something enabled that you shouldn't have enabled. If this problem is not exclusive to the DG, it's a problem with the headphones and you might want to try something different.

When I turn PCM, Dolby Headphones and 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter on, the instruments and bass sounds much better and more pronounced but the vocals get kinda pushed to the background and sound as if you're listening to them underwater.

When I do what you said and disable PCM, Dolby Headphones and the 7.1 Speaker thing, the Vocals get pushed to the foreground and sound better to my ears, but the instruments and bass gets pushed to the background and sound much weaker.

I'm trying to find a healthy middle ground between the two though. Also, I don't see any option for number of channels.

Have you tried changing the ohm output? By default it is set to <32ohm voip mode. I changed mine to pro-gaming mode 32-64ohms headsets. Just click the little hammer to the right of the analog out in the settings. This setting helped me with my HD598's.
