DIY: Bassy Non-Crap Drivers In Fake Solos?

I've been tempted of late to buy myself some $10 fake Beats Solos from Dealextreme (avoids being a true fake by not advertising with the Beats name and skewing the B a bit on the can) and transplant Portapro drivers in. Has anyone tried this? Would they even fit?

Thats a pretty stupid idea IMO. Portapro drivers has resonated space specifically for that driver. Transplanting them to an alien headphone wont make justice for them drivers.

Why would you even want to do this...?

The Porta Pros look great and sound great on their own.

You guys are really supportful. You never tried anything just because you felt like you could? I actually praise people like this, since I always felt this was the whole thought behind DIY - take an idea and make it happen. I'm pretty sure someone would have told Smeggy he was stupid for ruining pairs of perfectly good T50RP, but in the end he came up with the Thunderpants.

However ssrock64, a lot of people have thought about this. The Portapros are cheap, have an easy-to-love sound signature and are DIY-friendly. I once tried to use them in a different enclosure too. the thing is, they only sound good vented, if you put them in a closed space they muffle up. My advice is to try it if you already have the Portapros, you have nothing to lose (unless you damage the drivers). If you feel like the sound is bad, maybe use something designed for a closed shell like this.

I was thinking the HD202 from sennheiser.

Thanks for the response, guys. I was thinking of redesigning the enclosure to try to get the Portapros to sound good, but I'm not sure if I have the skill. Have any other drivers to recommend that I can get on the cheap (preferably under $35) but still sound decent?

I was thinking JVC HA-RX500 drivers, but those are probably too large and would sound bad in the small enclosure of the Solos anyways. Any other ideas?

Also (I hate to make three posts in a row, but my post rules dictate that if the topic is changed I make a new post), does anybody know of the driver size on the Solos? I know Monster doesn't release specs but there have to be measurement out there.

I've been thinking of messing around with some Superlux HD661 or Sony MDR-7506, most likely leaning towards the HD661 because the person I'm building the can for will be looking for a bassy soung sig. Any suggestions?

I can't find anything on the driver diameter, but I'd bet it's 40mm - I just can't see a 50mm driver fitting in there. I haven't tried the Superlux, but the MDR V7506 are very mid-oriented, they're used a lot in recording studios and radio stations [citation needed]. Maybe the Superlux are better for bass, not sure.

Yeah, I'm aware the V7506 are pretty mid-centric. I was thinking quality vs. quantity; the 7506 are pretty good for bass but lack the quantity my friend desires. I would think that the Solos could even have smaller drivers than 40mm, knowing how Monster is.

I have no idea about the size of the drivers or if they'd fit, but I was thinking of doing something to my CAL! drivers/headphones. I just don't like them, I know no one to give them to and I am willing to sacrifice them to doing something fun out of. Mostly for the experience.

Anyway, before I get out of hand with the off-topic, maybe you could check out the CAL! and it's drivers?

YES! How did I forget the CAL? They might be over 50$, but they are amazing, best price-quality ratio I ever found, and I usually find pretty good ones. Also they should work pretty well on a closed shell, even though I highly doubt the Solos have the space the CAL's shell has, so soundstage will be smaller.

Well, as said, I was thinking of doing something similar and I doubt the shipping from sweden would make it worthwhile when you could probably get a set of new ones for cheap..?
