Custom Portable Amp for a newbie

Hi guys,

I am interested in setting something up for pc/iphone use with a ATH-M50 headset.

I found the Mini 3 amp very interesting but I prefer something that could be recharged from the PC via the usb to mini usb port can be used as a pc amp.

Yet be usable as a portable amp for my iPhone and Galaxy 2 phone.

Any ideas guys please?

You can buy amps that charge from USB. The Fiio E6 for example, is a well priced, very small amp that performs well for its size/price/battery. but things that charge from USB are going to be limited by the 5v (ish) USB voltage to a 1 cell lithium ion battery (3.7v) or 3 cell NiMH (3.6v) and most of the DIY amps seem to need at least a 9v battery...

not custom, but check the fiio out.. there are reviews here on it.. it's really tiny which makes it really good for phone use and does charge from USB. It's also so cheap, you could look for something which plugs into the mains (or can use a much larger battery pack - say, one made out of AAs) for pc use.

Hi skree,

Many thanks for the great advice, i just got the M50s n they are pretty nice only slightly lacking in base n overall oomph but very nice for the price.

As for the amps, I did check out the fiio but felt they kind of muddied up the clarity a bit.  I'll probably get the mini 3 from MisterX but I'll do more reading on how well they match with the M50 first.

However, any further advice would be much appreciated.

Warmest regards,

Hi guys,

Again, thanks for the replies n info.  After much reading, the general view is that only a 9v batt I best used with a portable amp so I guess a pc usb charging version is out of the question.

Anyway, the hows the performance between the Mini3 n cMoyBB203 for the M50 please?

Many thanks n a happy new year!
