Complete audio upgrade for my desktop computer. Advice + wisdom needed :)

Hello everyone,

I have liked good sounding stereos since I was a kid but have not had a decent set-up in years. With about 10k songs on my pc/ipod I figured upgrading the audio would be a very worthwhile investment. I just ordered a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 pro's and a little fiio E5 amplifier to do me until I've decided on a proper set up. Forgive me for being a complete noob, but I get slightly confused when people start talking about amplifiers, sound cards, pre-amps, DAC's etc. I know what most of them do, but I don't know what would suit me best. I currently have a crappy pair of logitech 2.1s that I want to replace. I was thinking, if at all possible, that I could get a more hi-fi style set up, with 2 proper speakers and a seperate active subwoofer or something.

My budget would be £150 for the speakers/sub and any sound hardware to power my headphones and the speakers. Is it even possible? I wouldn't mind buying used equipment if I needed to. The reason for the low budget is that I am also upgrading to a 27" LED monitor. However, I could set aside a small amount of money for a later upgrade if it was truly worth it. Thanks for your help.

BTW: Can I just say thank you to this forum for putting me off those beats by dre headphones. Saved me £100 there, and i've undoubtedly got a much better pair of headphones.

Hmm if in the UK you can stretch your green by fishing out used gems from Gumtree, etc perhaps? A working vintage/classic amp and a pair of floorstanders on the cheap would be an awesome buy L3000.gif

Thanks for the advice. Would those amplifiers still be able to drive headphones too? Also, how would I plug them into my computer? Aux cable? Think I am going to go with some vintage floor speakers, they will make the room look awesome :)

Extremely demanding cans would be an issue but most would be fine and u need a 3.5mm/RCA from your line out of soundcard from PC to hook up to amp L3000.gif
