Upgrade Sony V6 for Home Recording

Thread Starter

I've read a few threads about people looking to upgrade their v6's for general use but I'm looking for an upgrade for studio/home recording use. I'll be monitoring bass and electric guitar and using them for monitoring and mixing in general for hip hop type instrumentals.  I have a saffire pro 14 interface that I'll be plugging them into and I'm looking for something that has better bass presence and doesn't need the volume cranked high to not sound flat and thin.  So far I've seen 25-1 ii, DT770,and DT880's recommended and was wondering if there's anything more suited for my setup.

Thanks!

Honestly, the V6 are very accurate, if a bit boring. For your use, i don't see a need to upgrade - you don't want too much introduced bass in a mixing monitor, since that will throw off your final master.

With that said, the Shure 840 might be something to look at. Still relatively neutral (though with a bit of a bass hump), but in all ways a better can then the V6.

The 25-1 II are great, but I like them for field monitoring, (and personal listening) not studio production. Signature is too off. Ditto the 770.

Never tried the 880 and cannot speak to them.

I agree with liamstrain. For studio purposes, the V6 is probably better than any of the audiophile phones you mentioned. If you really feel the need for an upgrade, look at something like the KRK KNS8400 or maybe the Shure SRH840/940. I can tell you that the more expensive Sony's, like the 7509HD, will not give you better bass presence.

I use the GMP 8.35, and the K-702 for more mixing and mastering.

2. K-240MKll the version @ 55 ohm
