Double Amping

The Headphones I use: HFI-580 (DJ-1) The Amps I use: Turtle Beach DSS Fiio E5 Used on: Xbox 360 videogames. Mostly. Computer Phone sometimes My Question: When I use 2 amps at the same time, I get more bass... My Challenge: The Fiio E5 sucks because it clips. My Question continued: Should I double amp using the Fiio E11 and the Turtle Beach DSS. Or should I just use the DSS and find someother way to get more bass? What I have done for now... I bought a Turtle Beach Micro II Which is a USB to Digital converter. Great for computers. But also amplifies. Waiting to see how that works out. For now, What are your thoughts on using two amps at once.

Wait, why do you get more bass when you double amp? Because you're using the Fiio's bass boost? And why do you need more bass with an Ultrasone for gaming?

The obvious problem with double amping is that you're increasing distortion. You're feeding whatever distortion the first amp creates into the second amp, which then adds its own distortion. The good news is the E11 has fairly low distortion, and will be inaudible on its own. The bad news is Turtle Beach gear is almost unanimously junk. Heck, their site specifies "THD <1%" which is a hundred times more than the E11 typically produces alone and is probably audible. More good news is you're not likely to care for gaming.

If you don't need the E11's bass boost but the DSS has enough power and you want its surround sound processing, use only that. I don't see much point in buying the E11 just for the bass boost, if you're going to ruin the signal by running it through the DSS afterwards.

Why does the E5 clip? Do you mean audio clipping, or that it has a clip? confused.gif

1. "The bad news is Turtle Beach gear is almost unanimously junk" So if I put a Turtle Beach sticker on a Senn HD 800 its junk? It would seem quite gullible to presume that something is of bad quality because of its brand. The same goes for thinking a pair of headphones are good because of the brand, this is why people buy Beats. So it would be best to stop assuming here. The Turtle Beach DSS is pretty damn good and I've heard all types of amps.

2. "why do you get more bass when you double amp?" I don't know. I think its  because I have more volume. I also use the bass boost, but I get (audio clipping) when I use the bass boost on the Fiio E5 while double amping, so I use it ONLY for more volume. Which in theory increases the dB of everything INCLUDING the bass.

3. The whole idea of buying the E11 was to use its bass boost while double amping in order to get more bass without high volumes. The principle I was trying to achieve was high bass low volume. I love immersing myself in a movie or a game and the vibrations of bass really sell the virtual reality of it especially the surround sound processing.

I will buy the E11 at a later time and use it only by itself when I'm not at home. And then use the DSS when I am at home.

Thank you for your reply :-)

Are you connecting the xbox to the TBS DSS using a digital optical cable?

or using the analog input on the DSS?

Personally I would not double amp.

How exactly are you hooking up the Micro II USB to digital converter?

I would run the digital optical cable from the xbox to the TBS DSS and plug the headphones into the TBS DSS, nothing more.

(and the USB plugging into something just for power).

I always use an optical cable, thats the whole reason I have the DSS, is for the Digital processing. I run a optical cable to DSS, than to headphones. I no longer double amp. When I'm on the computer. I use the Micro II USB --> Optical --> DSS --> Headphones
