Thanks everyone for the help.

I have narrowed my options down to the 840s, AKG k271s and the ATH-A900

I tried the 840s at a local guitar center and enjoyed the sound sig, but the clamping power was a bit much. I am going to revisit them. Anyone have an opinion on the k271s?

You can stretch most headphones overnight to bring down the clamping pressure. I haven't heard the K271's, but a lot of people say they have potential, yet it's hard to make them sound good because they need to be paired with an amp just right for them. If you don't have an amp and don't want to buy one, they probably aren't a good option.

like the guy said below. you can reduce clamping easily. but the 840 clamps? wow. i have the 440's and while it has a little less, it still clamps similarly from what i hear. and my 440's don't clamp at all compared to the HFI 580's. im sure the AKG and ATH's clamp much more than the SRH 840's. it's best to test them out. but yes. the SRH 840's are extremely popular monitor headphones on head fi. the AKG's are a little less heard about. but none the less. the AKG and the SRH's are fine series of headphones. i don't know much about the ATH series other than the M50's and a little on the M40's
