Which is the best portable fiio amp? Would the E7 be a good by? My source is an ipod and I'm going to be listening through the Fa-003/HM5s.

The AKG K270s are the classic, big huge studio headphones. There is little doubt if you see someone in these cans, they're tracking tasty licks on a new album. Despite their size, they do tend...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

A very all-round headphone for me. Just the right one to take on the go or on holiday. Also as a DJ, nice noice isolation. Very durable so you don't have to wonder if it will break if you throw...

The E7 is a DAC, with amp capabilities. I think the best portable amp they have in their line up at the moment is the E6. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could correct me if I'm wrong...?
EDIT: Forgot about the e11

The best amp they have is E11, that is until they release E17 in a couple of months.

Like Kingpage said, the E11 is better than E7. The E17 is the E7 successor coming soon. If your source is an ipod, I'm thinking it would be good to get a LOD for it too.

The E7 also includes a DAC, which isn't used with the iPods or iPhones. IIRC, the E6 and E7 are equal with regards to just the amp?
If you're basing your purchase off the question of what is the 'best' Fiio portable amp then I would counter that with another question which would be what is your max budget and how much are you willing to spend ?
Because in all probability if you can afford it you're better off waiting for the Fiio E17 due out shortly, on the other hand if you want something now I'd say go for the E7 - it has a good DAC for the money and a decent amp. It'll be cheaper now and it all adds up to better audio....plus as far as I'm aware the only difference with the E17 is the 192khz playback and maybe the amp used but apart from that it uses the same DAC as the E7 and it'll cost twice as much.
But if you're not bothering with a portable DAC then go for the E11 portable amp, but obviously you know your circumstances better than we do so go with what feels right to you and you won't go too far wrong.

Well I don't want to spend more than 100 dollars. I'm also looking at the PA2V2 amp.

My FiiO E11 and E5 have been wonderful. The E11 has a good bit more output than the E5, but I don't know how much power you need. They are both well built and work great with FiiO's LOD cable(I think this is a must for either.) The E11 is about the same size as my iPod Classic, maybe a few millimeters thicker. Never had any issues listening through that, my iPhone or my computers. Things I don't like/would change about them:
E5
Volume Up/Down switch is not my favorite. The volume steps aren't huge, but would prefer them a bit smaller.
E11
Volume knob can be a pit of a pain to adjust in a pocket or if it is rubber banded to my iPod/iPhone.
Both
Can't listen while charging!
Maybe I'm just a complainer about the volume adjustments!

Whoah there! I could listen to my E5 while charging. The "lamp" (diode?) turns blue when it's on, red when it's charging and purple when it's doing both amping music and charging. Is it something new that the E5 can't be listened to while charging?
I have no clue what amp/dac to buy with the DT 990 so I am very much considering just buying Fiio because I am too uninformed to make a better decision. Sounds like it would be between the E7 and the E11. How sure are you that the E17 will cost twice as much? I don't mind waiting for it but not sure I want to pay $200 for a portable amp/dac.

Well I read as much in the relevant thread, as for pricing the E17 probably will be twice as much as the E7 at the time of it's release because it's a superior and newer product. To be honest, I'm not sure if I want to pay new prices for the E17 either, I'm strongly considering playing the waiting game. But I already have the E7 for portable and home use....works a treat with the E9 and my DT 990 ;)
