Shopping for a friend.

I have a friend whose birthday is coming up in a week or two, and he's an aspiring musician. I managed to get a few friends to pile in for a pair of IEM's (He needs IEM's.)

We're looking at $80 if we get four people to give $20, MAYBE 5 people for $100. This is an incredible amount of money because we're just college students.

I know that the standard $79 recommendation is the RE0, but nowadays is that remaining possible $20 spent on the newish E6 (I have a LOD for him), or towards a $100 'phone?

Things I have found:

Westone 1's are 95$ on Amazon.

RE-Zero's, but that stupid adapter is something he would hate. #FWP

SE-215's? For that musician feel.

Open to suggestions. He isn't into a really bass heavy sound signature. He listens to Sigur Rios and Fleet Foxes and The Shins and Arcade Fire and Jack's Mannequin and lots of others.

Are you sure he would want an iem? Some people hate having anything in the ear canal. Does he already use iems?

Does he have a decent quality closed headphone? If not, then perhaps he might like a Sennheiser HD280 pro better than some iems.

He needs an IEM. 280 pro's aren't even the best in that budget... CAL's would probably be better anyway. I considered them, but IEM's are more important right now.

I am skeptical about the CAL. Do you know any professional musicians or recording studios that use it? Some do like the Sony V6 better than the HD280 pro.

Panasonic HJE900s if you could find them.

Don't the RE-Zeros need to be amped to sound good? If that's the case then scratch it off your list.

The HJE 900 is hard to find new, especially at a low price. Around a year and a half ago they were down to around $70. Now places that have it new want crazy prices. Some want $200+.

RE-Zero's don't need amping but they need an adapter... And I know that he would lose that adapter. Seriously. The E6 is somethinghe could use at home, while he brings the RE0's on the go without an amp sometimes. And he isn't recording necessarily, but RE0's are very neutral. I think I'm going with them unless there's any other last second dynamite suggestions.
