how effective are they? worth buying? Any recommendations before buying?

Any recommendation before buying ? Yes : browse Head-Fi forums for hours and hours to find the headphones you want, and buy cans recommended by head-fiers.

I don't think Soul by Ludacris headphones are the best in terms of sound quality for their price, as are the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. Yes, they are stylish, but the SQ isn't worth the bucks, according to what I've read.

I would recommend (I follow what I read on Head-Fi, not my experience) :

   - Audio-Technica ATH-M50 if you like bass. They are very, very popular among Head-Fi community.

   - Bainwavz HM5 if you want a flat sound.

   - Sennheiser HD25-1 II. They seem to be the best portable cans for the price.

I listed headphones in the same price range as the "little" Soul by Ludacris. For more expensive on-ear cans, see the Beyerdynamic DT 1350. For over-ear, I don't know.

The SL150 actually punches quite well, even amongst head-fi. If you like a slightly darker and *somewhat* (grain of salt) bassy sound sig, the Soul SL150 does quite well. If you can afford to drop more money, you can also look at V-MODA M80's for style and sound.

Don't know model numbers but I had a listen to these in a store and from brief impressions the small ones were awful but the larger model were actually pretty decent sounding as well as being very comfortable. There are certainly better headphones out there, but if you've got your heart set on pop-star endorsed fashion headphones, they are a much better option than the Dre Beats.
