Best large capacity portable player

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my iPod 5.5G (Rockboxed) with a high capacity (HDD) portable player. So far it seems the Cowon X7 is my best option, but does anyone have other suggestions or experience? I  need more than 80Gb of storage.

iPod Classic 80gb or 120gb...

Are you saying it's better than the X7 or just an alternative?

Well how much dough do you have to spend? I mean you could get a HiFiMan 801 and throw a 120gb SIM/SD card in there and that would be TOTL. I run an iPod Classic 80gb, but i personally would never go Cowon.

Why never to Cowon?

Ive never tried them, but its just a cheap chinese music player, than i feel isn't very good quality. That's just my feeling

I think that's nonsense. To me apple feels like a fashion accessory with little attention to anything but a user who listens to whatever's popular and feels it's ok to sink several hunderd in a device that doesn't even let you change the battery.

Cowon, and iriver back in the day and archos as well are a bit of a mixed bag. Their cheap products can feel very, very cheap. Their high end stuff tends to be well made with surprising audio quality. User interfaces are designed for the asian market and can be a bit quirky to our minds.

Today the Chinese are making very nice DAP and affordable for the audiophile. (Teclast, Hifiman, Hisoundaudio)

Any way Cowon is from South Corea and at the begining they are a software compagny creating Jetaudio and BBE algorithms.

As migou said, Cowon is Korean. I believe Hifiman is chinese, though.

iBasso DX100... hopefully. 64GB + microSD card slot. High end device, high end price though, not that anyone knows what it will be yet.

I would easily go for the cowon x7 for its exceptional sound quality (comparing to other cowons), vast tweakability options if ever need be, FM radio, battery life, powerful output through the headphone port, and so much more..

I understand, and im no Apple pepboy by any means. The other thing i like about Apple music devices, its it userface. It's probably something me and you would have to get used too.

iPod<X7. No contest in my opinion. The side of the USB cable that connects to the device on mine is kind of touchy, but other than that not cheap or bad quality at all. Build quality is totally on par with the iPod. You get tons more features and the sound quality is dramatically better.

Thanks for all the opinions everyone! Looks like the X7 is the go.

Does anyone know if it has more power output than the iPod 5.5G? I have a pair of Ultrasone HFI 650s (72 ohm) that the iPod can drive (just), but hoping for more from X7 and don't have stats on iPod power output to compare.

X7 is the most powerful even among the other cowons. Easily more powerful headphone-out is expected than an ipod.
