What headphones could work with a track like this?

I recently have been posting on my frustration trying to find a headphone that works well for the music I listen to, and have a very good example track to demonstrate my difficulties:

It's a rock/metal track, but with ambient effects and a lot going on. There's a big fight for the lower end between the baritone guitar, bass, and drums. Listening through a stereo system, it can sound excellent, but headphones seem to have a problem with it.

I currently have a pair of Grado SR-80s, and more recently some Sennheiser HD598s. I've actually seen a review that cites this track specifically as one that does work with Grado's very well - It's too busy, and the Grados are too bright for it.

The Senns are better with detail and soundstage, but also have major problems: If you listen to the part right at 5:00, you have a section the Grado's actually do very well with: The guitar has an awesome, heavy growl, and they make you want to bang your head. On the Senns, the guitar sounds like snot - I was quite surprised - but the guitar was a buzzy and indistinct character that was truly unappealing.

As I mentioned in another thread, the 598's are a Christmas gift I'm thinking seriously about returning for something else. They're growing on me, but they're not all I was searching for. But what am I looking for? Any suggestions?

What are you using to drive the headphones?

That's another thing I'm considering: I currently use an MBOX2 interface connected to my computer. I was thinking of getting the parts and putting together a CMoy pocket amp.

Depending on your budget, HD650 with a decent amp, if you're not will to shell out that much. Stick with what you got.

No real need to do that if you don't want to - JDS Labs will sell you a brand new one, fully assembled, for around $60.

For an inexpensive portable amp, it sounds very good indeed.

I do think you should get an amp before buying any more headphones.

The sound quality will improve significantly; and you'll eventually want to get an amp anyway.

For you Synesthesists out there: If I had to describe the HD598's with a color, it would be something like velvet red. I think I'm looking for a headphone that gives me more of an icy, winter blue. What would that be?

Actually, Zazex, having a DIY project is part of the appeal. I like putting things together.

Cool; just thought I'd let you know about the option if you weren't already aware of it.
