As the title states, I just got a pair of 598s on friday. After a day of burning in and listening to them I am absolutely in love. The sound is exceptional. The sound signature is just right (I love the amount of bass, not too much but very tight and punchy.) and they just look amazing. Everything about these guys is exactly what I want from a headphones except one huge thing.

They are open. I knew they were open when I ordered them but thought that after all of the reviews that I had to give em a try. I now have only a week left to return em.

The majority of their useis going to be inside, alone, in isolation - so open headphones aren't a problem then. It's the fact that they offer no flexibility. I have to take the bus a couple times a week, and I like working in the library when I have an important test, but I know that these cans won't last a minute in a library or on a bus. Also I would like the flexibility to take them on a plane.

I have a pair of Vmoda in-ear headphones that I could use for those situations, but then I feel like the 598s are a waste.

So my question; Do I keep the 598s and just bite the bullet when I go out in public (where I am realistically going to be doing just as much listening as I would alone at home) or is there a closed alternative that would offer a similar signature while also being sexy as hell?

I know sound quality is the most important but looks really do matter, I don't want to go out in public with a pair of oversized nasty lookin' cans.

I have ~$200 to work with if I am going to replace the 598s. Please help people, I don't know what to do!

Thanks all,

Jared

Some extra information about my situation;

I listen to alt rock, indie, acoustic, classical, jazz, blues, and classic rock.

I do NOT use an amp of any kind. I use just my phone, iPod or computer as a source.

Why replace them then? Buy a pair of cheap closed-back like the Panasonic RP-HTF600s.

If you used open cans in a quiet work or study environment, that'd be very selfish.

I suggest this idea, but I would suggest against the HTF600s. Those guys leak like a semi-open and really shouldn't be labeled as closed headphones. They have too many ports to the outside.

Fixed --- After fully explaining I realized that I want to be able to take them out in public. I have a pair of in-ear headphones that work fine, but I would like to be able to bring out a nice pair when I want to.

Pretty much the problem is that I want to find a good closed back headphone but nothing I've found compares the the 598s for the price (sound quality and style together)

Sorry, it's just an example off the top of my head. I'm sure there are better closed headphones that are more fitting for OP's tastes and a lack of leakage.

I tell you it's unlikely you will find something like that. I don't even know why you feel compelled to use the best headphones in unfavourable situations.

Bite the bullet, there headphones that will do similar things that are closed but they'll cost you a great deal more than $200. I've seen people studying at the library with HD598 and not be disturbed or disturb me with sound leakage so I'm guessing it can't be that bad.
