I wanted to tell everyone the final resolution. The burn-in didn't make any difference, however since my wife loves purple, she elected to keep them for herself. I purchased two Ford cans from Ebay, went to Radio Shack and replaced the foam, took the old drivers from my broken ones and put them into the replacement plastic. I did that because the left side was still connected to the longer cord which had the 3.5mm plug. The Fords both came with the 1/4" plug. I'm very happy now, and I have a spare pair with the 1/4" plug to use in the future. Thanks all for being so engaging.
