Need help making laptop sound better (external soundcard/dac question)

Thread Starter

I'm pretty new with this high fidelity stuff and I want to make the most out of what I have. I recently bought a pair of Audio Technica m50's (because of hype:D), but I feel like listening out of my HP dv6t laptop's realtek hd sound isn't really doing them justice. I have considered buying an external soundcard and was looking at:

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD USB Audio System with THX SB1240

ASUS Xonar U3 Sound Cards (XONAR_U3/UAD/B/A)

I don't really know much about external sound other than the assumption that I'll get better sound quality out of these products. I don't know what the difference between a dac and an external soundcard. I do listen to flac files off of foobar2000.

Anyway, I'm willing to spend around $75 to get better sound. Could you guys please help me with some:

-supportive feedback on the current items I am looking at

-recommendations for other sound sources in this range

-any info on how to improve my sound experience (i.e. I was just reading about something called WASAPI for foobar, no idea what it is)

The U3 is good except for the high 23ish ohm output impedance. Avoid it.

I'd recommend the Fiio E10.
