Any suggestions to improve my sound situation?

Thread Starter

Setup:

AKG Q701s
ASUS Xonar Essence STX
Windows 7 as my OS.

What I do:

-The latest version of foobar2000, with WASAPI, output set to 24-bit, replaygain disabled, and using the noise sharpening DSP @ 110% (foo_dsp_delta).

-The latest version of Fidelizer; the "moderate" performance reduction mode.

-I'm using a tweaked version of Reclock, which also pads the sound (I think?) to 32-bit.

-I use defaults/no EQ. I don't even have Hi-FI mode enabled on my CP settings because I find it ruins the sound.

-Headphones are plugged into the headphone jack at the back of my case (i.e the soundcard's actual port; not front panel), the headphone amp setting is at 64-300ohms mode.

-The default format in my Windows sound control panel is 44.1khz/24-bit.

-Only 8 services in Windows enabled (not like this will actually make a difference).

-All of my sound files are located on my SSD (probably doesn't make a difference).

-The foobar executable is always set to "realtime" priority (probably doesn't make a difference).

-I play 16-bit/44.1khz FLAC tracks.

Questions:

-Is there anything else I can do OS-side to improve my sound quality?

-Should I get an external amp for my Q701s? If so, may I have some recommendations?

-Any other general recommendations?

-Should I use the third-party universal Xonar drivers?

Thanks.

Can't answer everything but I'll get a couple of pieces out of the way.

Turn off the DSP. DSP give specific sounds to audio--maybe you like them, but in general, they do not improve on what is already there. Fumble with the equalizer if you want a brighter sound...at least you know what you're doing to the audio.

Snake oil.

That's a-ok. smily_headphones1.gif

Fine.

Yup...no difference at all. wink.gif People that say there's a difference with those items are uber-paranoid.

You probably can't make your perceived sound quality much better than you already have it at. Everyone hears things differently and your room size and setup matters a lot too. If you like what you hear, why change it?
