single malt scotch

Hey all,

I am not much of a drinker but I have been buying my father in law single malt scotch for Fathers day and his birthday for the past few years. Like anything else, I figure anything worth doing is worth obsessing over. So a few years ago I googled single malt scotch and found the somewhat snobbish/elitist single malt culture. I settled on Highland Speyside types as my focus, based on no particular facts or reason other than the blogger I found on the subject is quite entertaining. So far I have purchased some blended whisky like jonnie walker blue label before I knew what i was doing, an 18yo Glenfiddich, a 21yo glenlivet, a 20yo glenfarclas, a 21yo glengoyne, and finally a 25yo glendronach...I was offered a dram of the 18yo glenfiddich (in a large shot glass) and watched as my FIL poured two shots into a highball glass filled with crushed ice and water...Now, this man is in his mid 70s, a veteran, world traveller, the former mayor of Daytona, FL. and currently the wisest man I know...how can I stand by and watch him destroy a damn fine scotch...I sipped mine at room temp and added a few drops of warm water for a really pleasant drink with him. Should I just leave it alone or am I being a noobish snob? (Yesterday was my first taste of good scotch.)

C'mon now, if that's how he likes it, that's his preference.  And yes, you're being snobbish about it.

Have you ever had it his way?  Maybe you'd like it like that?  Gotta try it before you knock it.

I don't mind a single icecube sometimes, but only after the first one straight up.

I think I could grow to love scotch, and I really have no experience with single malt except for the one drink. I saw on a website where you can buy stones to freeze and add to the scotch...

I love good Scotch. If a person is drinking incorrectly and enjoys it, I would ignore it. Most people are not knowledgable when it comes to the true art of eating and drinking. In a way, we are all cavemen.

The point is that by doing it that way it dilutes the drink to the point where it makes no sense to have such nice scotch to begin with. It's like listening to Stax SR009 headphones while wearing earplugs. It just doesn't make sense. That said, it's his preference and that's what he'll do. There's no sense in saying anything unless it can come up naturally in conversation. If he does it so that it's cold, there are alternatives, if he does it to dilute it, there's no recourse. I worked at a well-to-do restaurant during college and as much as it made me wince when people would ice their $50 glass of scotch or put ice in their $400 bottle of eiswein, some people are just going to do what they are going to do and there's no sense in stopping them if it doesn't directly affect you. Good news though, OP! You can probably stop spending so much on Scotch and get some cheaper bottles since he likely can't tell the difference.
