How do I connect a turntable to my sound card?

Thread Starter

I have the Asus Xonar Xense sound card which has a 1/4 inch line in plug and I would like to buy a turntable to play some vinyl albums I have.  Is there a turntable that outputs to the 1/4 inch plug or can I convert RCA to the 1/4 inch?  Any suggestions on a turntable or just how to set it up will be appreciated.

Thanks

If the line in is stereo, you can connect any analog line out of any device to it with a 2x RCA to stereo TRS cable.

However, a turntable is a bit different.

You need a phone stage to beef up the signal to line level and apply the RIAA correction.

While I can't offer any specific recommendations, you might look into getting a turntable that connects to your PC with a USB cable.  These are made to be able to rip/archive your vinyl collection.  This may be preferrable, as once a lossless recording is saved on your computer, you could avoid any extra wear on the albums.  Also, there are some software editting tools available that supposedly do a wonderful job of restoring older albums to their original glory, or close to it anyway.
