Driving headphones with my receiver

I currently have a marantz sr5005, and I want to know if it will drive headphones any good from the front 1/4" output jack. The headphones in question are AKG K702's. I know running them through a headphone amp is ideal, but Im looking for an easy solution now. Your comments are much appreciated!

plug them in and see how they do. i couldn't find nothing looking through the manual. only good news it's a discrete unit with a power transformer/supply instead of op-amps so maybe the headphone out is tied to the speaker outputs via dropping resistors. if so it means your headphone out must have around 120ohm output impedance. other good news it has pre-outs, meaning if you want to get more power you can hook it directly to the pre-outs. hooking headphones to pre-outs is great alternative, especially for headphones up to 600ohms cause pre-outs have high voltage output at the connectors.

in order to use pre-outs you can use simple adapter like this

http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-3-5mm-Stereo-Male-Cable/dp/B001S0LUCI/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1324883500&sr=8-16

it basically converts the 3.5mm headphone/TRS jack into dual-phono/RCA jacks so you can hook it directly to the pre-out section.

That depends on the Headphone, and the 701/702 require decent power. Also, the quality/capability might be hinted at in your owners manual.

See if someone might live in your area that has the phone in question so you could test. Or preface before with retailer that the phones can be returned if they won't work. For modern gear, the Marantz has potential (at least with some offerings) of having adequate Headphone outs. It will be op-amp based I imagine.

Also, ask an amping question in the amp section....might have a greater response.

Thanks guys! You've given me some hope with your replies. I have given though to using the outputs in the back as well, but really wanted to stick with the 1/4" in the front for ease of access. I was looking into getting a monster cable that would reach from the receiver to my bed. After measuring the distance, it was about 29' that I needed, and it jutst sl hallens that a 30' cable is available. This also isn't factoring in the cable of the headphones.

I do remember reading how different sized cables can effect the sound while recording your mix, when playing guitar. I am now starting to wonder if the effect is detrimental to the sound, or just makes a very slight delay.

As for borrowing a set of cans from someone close by... It feels like I'm the only one around a 20 mile radius that actually cares about sound quality. Sure my friends might consider buying dre's headphones, or getting a nice system for their car... but I don't consider heavy bass and annoying the neighborhood to be considered hi-fi.
