Need help finding receiver to power K701

I am new, and I am trying to get a good set up. I am planing to buy a pair of AKG K701's but I have nothing to power them with. I later want to buy good Speakers so I thought I would settle for a 5.1 Receiver. I need help finding a receiver that would be good for my K701's. I am open to getting a dedicated headphone amp as well but If it could be avoided, I would prefer just a receiver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. redface.gif

I forgot to mention that I have a budget of $300 for the receiver. If I can't get a good enough receiver for that price than a headphone amp for $200-$250 is fine. I will also need a DAC in the headphone amp since I have bad onboard sound.

A nice Marantz 2270 or Kenwood KR-9600 are great receivers. IMO dont get a ****ty 5.1 plastic and .7 mm steel receiver. Get one from the good ol' days! You'll be happy!

I am needing it to be a 5.1 so I can hook up some speakers for surround sound. Old receivers are stereo not surround

Well my Pioneer 1250 is 6.0 and so thats 3 pairs of speakers or 2 pairs of speakers and a center.

If you later want to buy good speakers for music listening a 5.1 receiver wont do you any good. For your budget, get a ASUS STX sound card. All in one combo thats dent for everything.

I was thinking about getting just a 5.1 receiver since then I wouldn't have to get the STX or an headphone amp. SO is that my best bet and what do I do when I need a receiver when I get speakers?

or actually, I understand getting 2 nice speakers but what do you propose I do about movies? Do I need surround sound or do 2 Infinity P362's and a sub suffice? I am not good with this thingyet, that's why I joined Head-fi so I can learn the ropes. biggrin.gif
