Dizzy from looking at $100 - $150 headphones, please help!

Thread Starter

I hate to add a new thread, I thought I saw a link to an ongoing thread but can't seem to find it now, maybe my brain is overheating from all of the input over the last few hours.

Open / closed is not really an issue, as I will be using them in a pretty quiet environment without other people in the room. They will be strictly for listening, no studio work. My musical tastes are pretty eclectic. Beach Boys to Link Wray, to Smashing Pumpkins to Los Straightjackets to Super Junky Monkey to STP and The Beatles. No classical, maybe some big band jazz though. My sources will be CDs and DVD Audio from an OPPO DVD player through a Bravo V3, or WAV files from one of several places including an HTC G2 or a Creative ZEN Vision M. I guess I could run that through the amp as well. I have plenty of storage so I never compress my audio to save space. I am not up on all of the terminology, and some folks scoff at words like "soundstage", but I would like good tight bass that won't get muddy with a the distorted Stratocaster and millions of little overdubs that are mixed in ( think Siamese Dream ), but can still shimmer with the acoustic opening of Becks "Already Dead" from my DVD Audio copy. I like hearing instruments placed all around, not all "inside my head". I could go $200 but would like to stay around $150. Prefer around the ear cups. Am I asking too much?  Am I rambling? Probably.

Possibles include Sennheiser HD 518, HD 555 &558, Grado SR80i, my mind is drawing a blank on others.

I would appreciate any input.

On an unrelated note, if you like The Smashing Pumpkins at all, the Delux versions of Gish and Siamese Dream are pretty amazing.
