Shure SRH440 too quiet?

have just got the 440 yesterday and they are very quiet i have to have them on the loudest setting for them to be to my taste and even then they are not as loud as other headphones i have heard. is this normal? i use them on my iphone 4s

What are those other headphones exactly ?

Some over ear skull candys which where only about 20 quid. The 440 are comparable to the apple buds in volumei would actually say the apples are louder on the lower settings.

Well, maybe the other headphones are just easier to drive (although the SRH-440 should not be hard, either, it only needs about 0.5V RMS - which is probably close to what a typical portable device can output - for 110 dB), but if it is really quiet, there might indeed be a problem. Are both channels equally quiet ?

by quiet did you mean thin sounding? compared to skullcandies the 440 may sound a little bit thin and lack of bass, that might confused you to think that it is too quiet.
