Which reasonably priced DAC has the highest output stage? - Page 2

post #16 of 23

It's just a matter of matching gain level to get the HE-6 to work, with 1W@50 ohm, the HE-6 is already at 113.5 dB peak.

That is to say very loud by most people's standards, that's 7 Vrms as far as voltage swing is concerned, the Lyrr has a gain of 10, which means you need at least 0.7 Vrms output level of 113.5 dB peaks.

So, yeah, your standard 2Vrms source is perfectly fine for Lyrr + HE-6.

What about the Violectric V200 - do you know if the 2.7W into 50ohms that amp gives would be enough for the HE-6 with a standard 2Vrms source?

Yes.

I don´t think it is. The difference between the two is the output stage. Master-5 is class-A in everything, Master-6 class-A in everything except the output stage (in order to push more watts). So yeah, Master-6 is a complete beast :) Master-5 should sound better with easier to drive headphones, while Master-6 is for the really, really hungry ones.

Could Master-6 power the HE-6 single ended?

You would need to ask Kingwa the Single ended power output but don't the HE-6 come with balanced connection anyway. So why would you want to run them single ended?

bump.

Don't know if you read the 6moons review of the HE-6;

http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/hifiman2/3.html

Reviewer used some fairly common non-ultra high output headphone amps such as Burson HA160D, Schiit Valhalla, Meier Concerto, even Nuforce HDP, and said that they were insufficient for the HE-6 on a weak 1V DAC like an iPod - BUT with his 5.5V output Weiss DAC, every one of those amps could power the HE-6 to eardrum-shattering levels which would 'blow him into the weeds'

The output of the DAC is obviously VERY important in determining whether your setup can handle the HE-6.

Therefore I'm asking you if there are any DAC's that have an output of 5.5V or more and are much cheaper than the Weiss DAC (which is crazy money)!!

Both the Meier and the Schitt have 14 dB gain, and the Burson is limited to 250 mW.

Compare to that to, the Violectric V200 has a 28 dB gain (x5 voltage compared to 14 dB gain) and 2700 mW output power.

If the reviewer said that those units were almost ok for the HE-6 at 1V input, the V200 should be totally overkill at 1V input.

Same with the Lyrr.
