AMP or DAP?

Thread Starter

For my daily commutes, I use a 64Gb 1st Generation iPad or a clip+ with my AKG K 518 LE or Etymotic HF3 headphones. The iPad is too big for me and the clip+ is just too small for me (Battery life is a little short, GUI is too small, just the size of the DAP makes it un-ideal for me). Both headphones benefit from a little bit of amping, especially when using the the clip+ since it sounds more flat.

Right now I'm debating with myself what to get, a good DAP or a good headphone amplifier. My budget is roughly $150. I think I need a good pocket-sized DAP because it's better than carrying an iPad and with a $150 budget it will be better than the Clip+. But at the same time both of my headphones need amping and with a $100 I can get something like the iBasso D-Zero which I've heard not only has a good amp inside but also doubles as a DAC which is also what I need. What would you guys do in my situation and which DAC/AMP would you get? I'm open to buying used stuff as long as its something that's constantly listed on ebay or something like that and doesn't need scouting the internet.

(I'll always be upgrading parts of my rig but I need to know whats the most important thing that I need to get)

I will recommend to buy decent DAPs with lineout, so you can use later AMP/DAC with iPad and DAPs like Sony X1000 series(16GB, 32GB), S:Flo2, HM_601, iPod Classic, Sansa Fuze, Samsung P3.

Well i have similar concerns. Am more than happy with my cowon J3 but i want to buy something with line out like the fuze.Is there a quick link about these stuff?

So on a fuze you can connect an amp and a dac(beneficially?) You could also use a combined device like fiio e7 (amp+dac)?
