Okay, so I sold off my Denon D2000 and went to Amazon to buy the D5000 for $500, and I found an open box D7000 for $580. I would never pay the usual $300 premium between the two, but for $80, it seemed like a no-brainer. From all the posts that I read, there doesn't seem to be a dramatic difference between them, but (seemingly) enough to make it worthwhile for me (?) Is it true that the bass quantity in the D7000 is only slightly less than the D5000 as well as being somewhat tighter and more controlled? That's what I'm hoping for.

Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

One thing to consider is that the D7000 has a different driver than the D5000 and D2000, which share the same driver. The D7000's driver has a stronger magnet, which should allow for a more detailed and controlled presentation.

Id say no, unless you have the proper amp to run them, which by the looks of it you dont even have an amp for the AH-5000's if you get them.

but but but this is head-fi! Eventually one will buy an amp later down the road
I'd say go for it. The reason is because if you do sell this, you'll be able to sell it for a lot less than the retail price. People will jump on the deal in the FS forum. The second reason is because it's their flagship. You might at some point wish to upgrade from D5000 to the D7000. So why not just go for the best? It's a good deal to pass up.

I had the AH-5000's and the dont do justice without an amp, and if you do the same you will also be the same. A $200-400 portable amp will do fine for either headphone as well.
What makes you think I don't have an amp? Because there's nothing in my signature or profile? Both headphones can be used without an amp, and both are considerably better with an amp, but that has nothing to do with my question. I was asking if/how the sound signature changes between the D5000 and D7000 - and if it's worth 80 bucks to step up to the D7000. FYI - I have the iBasso D6 DAC/AMP.

Absolutely get the D7000- I spent a $300 premium to get the D7000 after purchasing the D5000, got to compare the two for several months and it was well worth it. The mids are much better and the bass is more controlled. That is actually in the ballpark for what we pay around here for subtle improvements in sound.

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for. It's the "more controlled" bass that swayed my decision, I just hoping the drop=off in bass quantity isn't too drastic.
The D7000 sounds great unamped.

I had them both (D5000 and D7000) side by side for a couple weeks. Without question spend the extra $80 for the D7000. Don't even think about it! It's funny, it took most of 2 weeks for me to decide it was worth it. I got the D7000 when they could be had at $600 +/- new. I had paid $350 used for the D5000's. I sold the D5000's at a slight loss, and was just thrilled wit hthe D7000's. I'd still have them had I not scaled down to my protable rig(s). At an $80 premium - do it without a second thought!

Anything can be used without an amp, including HD800's, LCD-3,etc; but do they sound good? No they suck, so thats why i was mentioning if you had an amp or not. The iBasso i think would be a little underpowered, but im not 100% sure for the AH-7000's. For the extra $80, i would not even think twice for the AH-7000's. I had the AH-5000's, and if all i had to do was spend an extra $80 i would. But i bought mine on Head-Fi for $350 so your maybe buying them new at MSRP, and are aloud to only pay an extra $80,.

Definitely think they are worth the extra 80 bucks. If I could have found a deal like that I would have jumped on it. Got my Denons new for $399.00 though.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just made the purchase for the D7000's. The funny thing is, in the description of the product it says (Black). That's how they're listed on Amazon right now. Does that mean the ear cups are black? I did find a youtube video where someone did have what appeared to be a black pair. Do these really come in black? Is that what I should expect when I open the package???
