New Hifiman Headphone HE-400 is out - Page 365

If the amp was already on, that's normal with audio electronics.

As for advice with planar magnetics.  There's nothing inherently too different about them as far as usage.  Just treat them normally.

Shouldn't really matter if the amp is on or not, just keep the volume down.  What you're hearing is a brief spike of current, exciting the drivers.  If the volume is at 0, this will minimize the spike.

is this going to happen every time i plug them in?

also, any advice for someone who's brand new to planar magnetic anything?

thanks.

If there's no music playing you may have some DC offset on the amp's outputs.  No amp is perfect and sometimes they have a little bit of voltage (say +/- tens of millivolts) instead of a pure "zero volts" when sitting idle.  That will cause a one-off "pop" when plugging in, otherwise the "crackle" could be just noisy contacts when plugging in.  if the "crackling" continues after this, then it could be some intermittent connections in the plug or socket.  Try tapping the plug with the blunt end of a pencil (or similar) - you should not hear any effects from this.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd share with you fellow HE-400 owners what I'm listening to right now on mine:

http://enigmatiksounds.bandcamp.com/album/evolving-freedom

This free awesome electronica compilation came out today. It will really give your cans a workout :)

Nice mix of chill, psybient, glitch, dub, dnb, everything you can imagine. Killer sampling.

Enig'matik is an Australian based label, there's heaps more free / pay-what-you-want releases on their bandcamp

All available in FLAC too!!

Especially look out for the mix of incredible sampling, vocals, bass, stereo-width/panning etc on the Mind Tree track...

I've never been happier to own these headphones, for me it beats listening on my $2000 Mackie studio monitor speakers and is a more immersive experience..

You always get the interference/acoustic qualities and muddiness that go along with a room with speakers too, unless you treat/dampen it properly... ($)

I'm also enjoying this subtle EQ in foobar, gives them that little extra bit of sub, and tames the upper treble, letting me turn them up that bit louder (though its probably not the greatest idea...but these planars just sound so damn good LOUD!). Velour pads of course.

Haha, that's the opposite of me...  I bought some more connectors off hifiman and built my woody magnums to use the same cable as my HE-400's.   Not that I love the particular connector, but I just wanted one nice cable, and didn't want to mod the HE-400 to use something else.

The best connector is no connector.

Actually, if you check the site "Double Helix Cables" they sell a revised connector that is supposed to be easier to solder than the standard HifiMAN connectors.  Their price is about the same as HifiMAN, too - $12.00 or so for a pair.

Speaking of cables, has anyone tried the Head-Direct cables with the HE-400's? The price looks good, but I don't know why anyone needs a 16ft/25ft cable.

My $2 headband mod.

Now it's light as feather, and I dont have to wiggle the headphone to get the right position anymore.

Same idea as the Beyer headband, the softness and even padding made the 400s so much better.

Yup, that's where I get my idea from.

I almost buy the Beyer headband, but I am not in the states so I concern that have to pay ridiculous high shipping, so I look for alternative. And the sport headband came up to me when I visited a sport shop.

Received a pair of HE500s today; comparing it to my HE400s they are much more mellow-sounding, mainly due to the difference in voicing. HE400s sound more lively and dynamic due to its "fun" voicing and actually presents instrumental (non-guitar) music better than the HE500. As for vocal music, again it's "smooth vs dynamic", neither of the two seem to pop out as the obvious winner here, as their voicing are just too different in the upper half of the FR.

The HE500s are surprisingly efficient, maybe a few ticks more on the volume control out of my E17 compared to HE400.

One thing is for sure though, the 500s render female vocals with much more justice than the HE400s.
