New Hifiman Headphone HE-400 is out - Page 301

Has the 3rd revision started to grow on people that own them?

So, lol. Head-Direct never canceled my order and I got a shipping notification today. Turns out they actually DID ship it on Monday, but I didn't get the FedEx tracking until today. They're set to arrive tomorrow. What's unfortunate is I bought a pair of HD600s from another guy on the forums (think I said this already) so I have 2 pairs of headphones on their way. I was going to send the HE400s back but I just can't do that! Especially when they're going to be here before the HD600s. I got my ODAC today and I can already tell the difference between it and my E17 with my DT880s. I'm just going to listen to the HE400s and the HD600s and if I end up not liking one pair (I fear I will love them both) I will sell one. We'll have to see... this hobby is getting dangerously expensive.

Ha! Not gonna happen! Enjoy throwing away (not to be the last) ~$800 into this bottomless spiral of a hobby.

*high five*! Just sell off the pair you feel you can part with (huge hint, you're going to love the 400, unless you like super neutral cans.) I'm returning my 650's to best buy in a week or so. It's a really great experience having both cans, lets you appreciate both more (but having to choose between them is...very hard.)

I have a Lyr on the way too. dt880smile.png

I tried tightening the screws on the right driver, and it didn't fix the problem...guess I'll have to return them and R3s...

Just saw on another thread, which some of you probably also have noticed.  New planar magnetic coming to the market, the JPS Labs Abyss hp.

yokken: I sold my 600 before I bought my HE-400. IMHO it comes down to a choice between timbre and bass--the HD600 has a very pleasing timbre to most music (especially acoustic, classical), but the HE-400 actually has a "cleaner"/brighter timbre and a louder, tighter bass.

This is a very accurate description comparing these two. The hd600 vs he400...I'll take the he400. But hd650 vs he400 is a much tougher choice!!

Well guys, let's not fool ourselves, OKwink_face.gif

I mean unless one decides to become head honcho in summit-fi forum by buying silver cables and $25K sources, this hobby is quite opposite- very inexpensive.

You can go "crazy" spending say $10K which will get you bunch of higher-end cans, amps and stuff. Where will $10K get you in many other typical hobbies- cars, bikes, watches etc? Nowherebiggrin.gif

Hey, is there any chance that HFM snuck a new cable on the new r3 version of the he400? This could contribute to the hotter treble..just saying.

Nope; I never sent in my old cable for replacement, all I got back are the bare headphones. It's definitely a driver tuning change.

The HD600 was my first 'serious' headphone (after the SR80i).  I found it unengaging (i.e. no fun factor for me) so went to the HD650.  The HD650 was better but still lacking.  I stumbled across this thread and ended up ordering the HE400 (rev2) without ever having the chance to hear it.  Wow, it brought the fun back into the music.. for me.. YMMV.

It will be interesting hearing what you think of the two.. let us know.

There's nothing wrong with owing/liking two great pairs of cans!very_evil_smiley.gif  (I don't think my brain can handle more than 2 serious pairs)
