New Hifiman Headphone HE-400 is out - Page 8

I just thought of this...

...does the HE-400 use single-sided drivers (1 magnet per driver) like the HE-4? blankdisc, did you by chance notice this? I think this would be interesting.

nope. it still has two magnets in each driver like HE-500/HE-6. HE-400 is completely different from HE-4. i told Fang that ppl might be confused because of the names. hehe...

Interesting. I would think that it would use half the magnets like the HE-4 since they're both "low-end" models. Gosh, I really want to trade out my HE-4 to try the HE-400.

Really? I was going to ask but I kind of just assumed it would be one sided.. hmm, this leaves room for an even cheaper ortho then.
Who here has pre-ordered? I'm planning to soon, I hope it lives up to the hype.

Two sided? That sounds better that the diagram is operating in a more push pull arrangement. It sounds less likely to suffer any dynamic compression then.

I've always been a fan of how Hifiman's headphones perform, but this just kills me:

They wire most of their drivers backwards.  I know it doesn't make much of a difference, but it sets my OCD off like you wouldn't believe!

Ya know that a single "jump" can't be perceived as having a frequency, it's too short.  And if that isn't good enough for you, you could probably alter a cable to change it around.

where is the hype? there is no hype. ^_^ there are only two posts on headfi about HE-400, and this one hasn't even passed 10 pages yet. i probably posted half of them. hehe....

according to Fang they figured out a way to manufacture it in a way that requires much less manual work and can be produced much quickly, so the lower labor cost and high efficiency of manufacturing allows them to sell it at a much lower price and still make a profit.

1. In terms of the build quality, it's exactly the same as HE-500 and HE-6. Personally I can't tell the difference at all.

2. The blue color actually looks pretty refreshing. I thought i wouldn't like it, but i kind of do.

3. The first thing people will notice about this headphone is the bass. I have heard almost every single Hifiman Planar headphone, and they always stay just a little bit light on the amount of bass (although they do hit pretty deep). HE-400 is different. It's the first Hifiman headphone which will grab you first with its bass performance. It's definitely tuned for Rock, Electric or R&B music. I can't help myself to compare it against LCD2 which has fantastic bass performance. I am not going to comment on the actual performance yet until I listen to it for at least one week or two.

4. I have been driving it directly out of my iPhone4, and getting surprisingly good sound. The volume is at 80%, and everything you expect from a planar headphone is all there. Yes, it definitely performs better with an amp, and I am always against not using an amp especially with an Ortho. HE-400 is changing my mind. It gives you an option to drive it directly out of i-devices, and not making you feel that you are missing something. It's quite awesome actually.

5. How does it compare against HE-500? well...HE-500 is still superior when it comes to transparency and clarity, but HE-400 offers better bass impact and is much easier to drive. After the recent price drop on HE-500, it is considered as the best value on the headphone market right now, and i think that HE-400 just took over the crown in terms of value.

How do you have the first pair of HE-400's?

Are these the only impressions so far on the HE-400's?

So far, yes.  Mike from Headfonia said he's expecting a pair soon.  So, we'll be seeing full reviews in a few weeks.

Mike ends up comparing everything to the HD650 so I look forward to reading his review.  I'm torn between taking advantage of the promo price and buying a better PS for my DAC.  Too bad the promo price will end before more impressions come out.

Edit: Does anyone know if this will come with velour pads, or only pleather?  Blankdisc?

Great impressions so far blankdisc! This sounds like just the ticket for me since it can be driven so easily and still be comparable to something like the He500/LCD2. beerchug.gif

leather pads for sure, velour pads most likely not 100% sure. Leather pads now comes with an extra layer of foam inside, so in my opinion much better than the velour pads

Fang arrived in the states last week to prepare for their CES show. I robbed his hotel room. :) I was told they are having a huge show.

Not planning to write any more, but will try to answer all your questions :)

Is there any other headphone you've listened to in the $400 range with contending sound quality aspect(s) compared to HE400? By aspects I mean the usuals (treble/mids/bass/imaging/sound stage).
