Questions about some new Over Ear Headphones!

Hey guys.

this is my first thread and post so be nice :) I've been lurking around here enough to know that this is the best place for advice for anything sound related; even when reading reviews online, you guys are always referred to!

Anyway, I already have a pair of UE 700s which are great for cycling and being busy; although sometimes when I'm just chilling at home I would prefer to use some full sized less intrusive so to speak headphones.

I noticed that there is the 2011 Holiday gift guide which is great but I can't make my mind up to which headphones to get.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50's seem to be pretty much every recommendation given to comments for it and at around $160 its a nice price; but is there limitations to the sound say if we increased the price range another $100 is there anything which is left out?

The price range is going to be crucial; I wouldn't mind spending $250 on some over-ear's if they are the best I could get; also I'm British so if there are any cheaper alternatives which are better this would help as I will be buying them most probably online in Pounds!

Thanks guys!! regular_smile%20.gif

EDIT: seen the thread "

Buying headphones? Seeking guidance? DON'T START A NEW THREAD. Ask for advice HERE"

Sorry should have read first, also another question I will not be using an Amp do I need one with these headphones, is it going to have a major impact to the sound quality say from a standard laptop headphone port? If so which are the best amps!

HFi 780 imo or HFi 580 (more punchy bass, but less refined and detailed) or SRH 840 (more balanced, but less bass)

D2000 if you have a good price from a vendor.

okay thanks so now it's just between the HFI 870's or the D2000 time for some reviews; thanks DVDRey your advice has been great! :)

If you can find the D2000 at a reasonable price, I think that's the best out of the bunch.

just had a look online to find the prices compare the headphones!

Audio technica ATH M50's are roughly £130 so $200

whilst the HFi 780's are £160 so $250

then the D2000's are £250 so $390

so are the D2000's really worth the difference? :)

Both are different sound signature, i find D2000 more V-shaped, but less aggressive, less tiring on the long term and also overall very good. Worth the difference ? In France NO (470 euros, lol), if UK=300 euros, yes.

For example : HFi780 in France = 170 €.

thanks for the great advice again! I have just been looking at some reviews and some say that the wire to the headphones is easily damaged for the d2000 and that the whole design is to e used carefully; well unfortunately i need some more robust headphones, i am worried that the d2000's are not as strong as i hoped! how have yours been?? :)

D2000 is actually delicate. HFi 780 is much more robust, normal for a portable headphone.

Mine, well in the trash, lol. Joking aside, my D2000 has a common problem, the right headset was falling. Sent to customer service, a month of waiting, I sold them after return to a friend. I ll buy one day the D7000, but very disappointed with the reliability. And in France, Denon's gear are too overpriced, a shame.
