...so many to choose from...I'll have to make it top three.

Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi
Peter Gabriel - Passion: Last Temptation of Christ
Basil Poledouris - Conan the Barbarian

It's difficult to find "the best". But another one that shouldn't be forgotten:
J. Horner - Braveheart

I wouldn't call it the best soundtrack album, but one of the more useful is Willow. Music by James Horner. Great for positioning speakers.

A local stereo store uses it to demonstrate soundstaging, and I don't think I've ever heard another recording with the pinpoint placement of sound effects on both the vertical and horizontal planes.

The cavernously deep voice singing in that soundtrack is spectacularly scary, truly seems to be a voice singing from beyond the grave. I don't like too much some parts when there's mostly high freq. occilating synthesized music, and the choirs in some other parts are a bit tiring. But that organ and the voice from beyond are amazing.

I personally like the first soundtrack of the Lord of the Rings trio, "Fellowship of the Rings"
