Output computer sound thru HDMI and computer video thru DVI???

I want to output 7.1 surround sound thru my Yamaha RX-V663 receiver. My motherboard can output sound for either SPDIF or HDMI.

I heard that SPDIF can't transmit 7.1 sound, is that true??

My monitor is U2410. Its resolution is 1920x1200. I have a PS3, too. I connected both of them thru the receiver. It seems to me now I an able to get 7.1 sound from both sources.

However, I find that the PC side now only receive 1920x1080 signal from the receiver. I re-read the V663 manual and indeed it can only output 1080p from its HDMI out.

My GT520 graphics card also has a DVI port. Can I just buy a DVI port for PC video to fix this. If I do this, can I still get 7.1 sound from PC???

Thanks a lot in advance!

SPDIF can be for uncompressed stereo sound.  You can use it for multi-channel as well if the audio stream is encoded in DTS or Dolby Digital, either of which your receiver supports.  You can use HDMI as well to output digital audio to the receiver.

An extra DVI port?  Or do you mean a DVI cable?  Yes, I think you should just connect your monitor to your graphics card with a DVI cable if possible (check to see if your monitor has a DVI port, too).  You do not need to connect your monitor to your receiver for multi-channel sound.

Thank you for your reply. I know SPDIF can for sure transmit 5.1 signal but I heard that it can't transmit 7.1 signal. Are you sure it can transmit 7.1 signal??

My graphics card has a DVI port and an HDMI port. My monitor also has both ports. I am thinking if it is possible to output sound thru HDMI to the receiver and the video thru DVI to the monitor. By doing that, I can get my 1920x1200 resolution back.

Good question.  I do not know if 7.1 can be transmitted through SPDIF.

Yes, you should probably just go HDMI for audio and DVI for video.

Edit: you can output 7.1 through SPDIF if the audio stream is encoded in DTS.  Dolby Digital only supports up to 5.1 through SPDIF, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

SPDIF just doesn't have the bandwidth to do dolby truehd or master audio. DVI to monitor and hdmi to receiver will work fine

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if the graphics card can really do this separated audio and video output?

I am asking this question because I haven't bought the DVI cable yet. A definite answer here can help me decide what to do.

yes it can. DVI will be set to your primary display, and your audio will be set to hdmi
