Upgrade from Beyerdynamic DT-990 600 Ohm

Hello Head-Fi'ers more knowledgeable than I!

With the holidays right around the corner, I'm thinking of treating myself to a new pair of cans. I've got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT-990 600 Ohm headphones, and so far I've been happy with them. I want to upgrade to something with a similar frequency range and balance but a higher resolution with detail. I would also be ok with something more neutral (i.e. less bass presence) if it has really clear detail. A fuller soundstage would be nice, too, but I'm not going to get too picky. I have the cans paired with a Millet Hybrid MiniMax.

So I'm looking for something with the qualities listed above that can be paired well with a MiniMax. I'd like to keep the price under $500 if possible. Any recommendations?

Thank y'all in advance!

Heya,

AudioTechnica A900X

AKG Q701

Beyer DT880 600ohm

Or just stop playing games and go straight to the Hifiman HE-500.

Also note, your music has to be higher resolution, better recordings, etc, to actually get anything from all the equipment since you're essentially limited to the quality of the recording itself. A bad recording will not sound better on good equipment (in fact, it just sounds worse really). Upsampling, converting, etc, doesn't fix this. The original recording itself needs to be basically flawless. Check out some stuff on HDtracks.com on your current headphones before you buy new ones to see if that's what needs to change first.

Very best,

So would you say that a V0 from a perfect FLAC rip would provide the source quality necessary? Or does it have to be the FLAC itself? In my own experience on the DT990s, I  haven't noticed a difference between a FLAC and a V0, but maybe with a better set of cans, the difference is more noticeable.

For the love of all things that are good, GET THE HIFIMAN HE4

Those are for all intents and purposes, the DT990 in Ortho form, with better treble control.

Just...trust me. As a two time owner of the DT990/600 and one time HE-4 owner, I will personally guarantee you, that the HE-4 is the one you want if you want a similar signature, but improvements in all aspects.

People can recommend you other stuff like the HE500, but they won't sound like the DT990 in signature. The HE-4 does, and is $450.

Still really new to hi-fi audio, so I have a lot of questions. I'm liking what I've read about the HE-500; I'm willing to try a new sound signature if what I've heard so far about it is true! What kind of amp would pair best with the Hifiman HE's (either 4 or 500)? Would a MiniMax be ok? My concern is that since I'm going to be spending a lot to get the phones, I can't get a new amp at this point.

Thanks! And merry Christmas (and/or Happy Chanukah) to all!
