Best bass headphones under $200

First topic on these forums! Bear with me I'm just a noob. Basically what I'm looking for is a pair of headphones that have decent bass (not overbearing) for under $200, preferably closer to $150. The main genres I listen to are hip-hop/rap and rock. If possible they should also be "semi-portable" (able to do a little more than just walking around relatively easily), but if not that's ok.

Any suggestions/pointers would be helpful, and if this topic has been done to death a link to a similar topic would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to head-fi,

Take a look at the HFI-580's. (ultrasone)

ATH-m50, Shure Srh-750dj

HFi580 (more punchy bass) or HFi780 (more refined and detailed).

Thanks so far! Also, what would be a comfortable set? And how do the ATH-A700 compare? I forgot to mention I would prefer a closed set.

There are comfortable, but less than ATH-A or AD series.

I haven't tried A700, but ATH-A or AD aren't portable headphone, there are very big and leak a lot, even A serie. HFi are much more "portable" and with very good isolation.

I like ATH sound, but for hiphop/rap...

I think you'd like the ATH-M50 for its sound, but it is severely uncomfortable for long listening sessions because of its extreme clamping force. I have almost a thousand hours on mine and they have never loosened up in fit.

I just realized I posted A700 instead of A900. So, how do the A900's stack up? Also it seems the ATH-M50 and the HFi 580 are two top choices. How do they compare in durability? I won't treat them terribly but how would they fare if they fell or were occasionally stored in a backpack?

I have had my ATH-M50's for quite some time now and I don't even notice them on my head. Are you sure your head isn't made of like jello or something? I find the M50's to be very comfortable. Can't say much about isolation though since they are very bulky.

HFi 580 is better than M50 imo. Concerning durability, M50 and HFI 580 are very robust, much more than A900, relatively fragile imo with aluminum shell.

The A700 and A900 are nothing of the sort if you want some bass at all. Plus they're built like marshmellows on sticks, in terms of durability.

Suggestions:

Ultrasone HFI 580 (or 780)

Ultrasone PRO 650

Shure SRH750 DJ & SRH840

Beyer DT770 PRO

Fischer FA-003 (or Brainwavz HM5)

Very best,

CALs (Creative Aurvana Live), closed, 32-Ohm, nice sound.

Cups are on the small size, barely fits around my ears.

Really great price at Amazon and creative Labs.

The DT 770 look nice, but what is the difference between the various versions? As of now I'm going to be listening through my iPhone or computer. If it's recommended I might get an inexpensive amp. Right now I'm debating between the HFI-580 and DT 770. Thoughts?

Also I have an Astro Mix-Amp. Is that a good amp for these headphones? And how well does the DT-770 perform with no amp?

The DT770 32-Ohm and 80-Ohm will work decently without a headphone amplifier.

But a headphone amplifier bring out their best.

I've never used a mix-amp, but I'm guessing it will do the job.
