Good Headphones?

Thread Starter

So for years I just used fairly inexpensive headphones, but I then got some Audéo PFE 122 in ear headphones, which were incredible. I wish to get some equally good headphones as a non in-ear alternative.

I am not sure how much I am willing spend yet, but if anyone could make recommendations that would be in a similar sound quality range as the Audéo's? Or simply any good mid end headphones.

Well, let's start off with the basics

What are you going to be using them for?

Willing to get an amp/dac?

Closed, open?

Sound signature preference?

Musical preference?

1. Listening to music or movies.

2. This another thing I don't know that much about. Eventually yes, but it would depending on what an entry price would do. For the moment lets say no.

3. I am not really sure. The last pair I used briefly were Sennheiser HD202's which are closed, and I enjoyed those at the time.

4. The Audéo PFE's have a very clean neutral sound which I really loved.

5. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music so classic, folk, jazz, rock, electronic.

Oh, forgot one crucial part(knew I forgot one). Price range?

I guess, I wouldn't want to go much higher than £130.

LOL I'll try my best to compensate for euro conversion.

I think one to consider is the AD700. It gets talked about all the time and sometimes too much but it is pretty good at a lot of things and great for acoustic music for it's price range. The only thing I think it just really drops the ball on is impact and extension on the low end. It can really just be dissatisfying for some types of music. I used it for two years though and I do think that when I'm not listening to things like EDM and the like, it gets the job done pretty well. Even now it surprises me with its spacial qualities. I will be back with some more suggestions though.

I think for your price range though, an amp is definitely out of the question and things that need one. Where are you going to be listening from though? And are you going to be using these at home or will you be doing some portable listening as well.

Great, I'll read up about them out!

I will predominantly be listening through my laptop/PC. And I intend to just use these headphones at home.

Thanks for the replies!

I know you said you listen to a variety of music but do you say you listen to more acoustic stuff(classical, jazz, some rock) or more modern type of music?

If you like a neutral sound (and I may sound like a broken record here if you've read through any of the other newbie threads), I'd recommend the Fischer Audio FA-003/Brainwavz HM5/LINDY Premium Hi-Fi. While tech specs have not been officially confirmed, the general consensus is that all three of those are basically the same headphone. However, your preference of going un-amped is a dealbreaker for portable use of that can. Are you sure you wouldn't like an amp?

Yeah, those are newer phones and I don't know much about them, I'd look into it though, I also don't know much about the audio technica ES7 but I hear its name a lot so look into that too.

How much would I need to spend for a suitable amp? And out of interest, would the amp benefit my PFEs?

I read a review of the Fischer Audio FA-003 on here, and they sound great!

I suggest the JDS Labs CMoyBB 2.03 if you're looking on the cheap, and the FiiO E6 is also a cheap, good choice. I don't think you'll see too much of a difference with the PFEs, as they're pretty easily driven.

I see. And how would a headphone like the FA-003 sound without an amp? I ask because I may purchase some headphones and later down the line(few months) purchase an amp, or would they just sound poor without an amp?

I've personally only heard the FA-003 amped when using a portable source, so I couldn't tell you. Just looking at specifications, a portable player would use a lot of power driving the FA-003 without an amp, but it would still work. The sensitivity of the FA-003 means that it can be driven without an amp, but it'll murder your battery life.

I'd be using them primarily with my Laptop(plugged in), I don't plan to use them on the go.
