Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong forum. I didnt want to put it under DIY because this is specifically concerning subwoofer/speaker placement.
I have audioengine A5's and my subwoofer is the Dayton Audio Titanic, 10" version. I currently have it in the corner under my desk as you can see in the pictures below. I havent configured the gain, phase, or crossover frequency of it just yet because I'm not entirely too sure how to.
I was thinking I'd get some low frequency sweeping tones and play them with the subwoofer turned on and then figure out where my audioengine A5's just start loosing "oomph", then set the crossover frequency there on the subwoofer. I believe this is around 70 hz or so with slow roll off down to 40 before the A5's cut off. The subwoofer can go up to like 1000hz and down to god knows where. I figure gain will need to be changed depending on the type of music i'm listening to and what kind of a mood i'm in. Sometimes a shower just needs a bit of thundering bass
My next much bigger issue is speaker and subwoofer placement. Right now I have the A5's on my table but I was thinking they might be better off as one on the bookshelf and one on the far corner. However, the subwoofer in particular is hard to place. Under my table where it is now, the bass sounded so horribly muddy that I didnt even want to listen to the song (In The Way by Nero is my bass speed response test). It thumps just fine and although the loudness underneath the table is unbearable from its current location, the loudness at my head-level is just fine. The A5's can only go in 2 places as far as I can see: One on the bookcase and one on the black table in the corner, or both on th eblack table with my entire rig facing the doorway instead of the bed. The problem with the second setup is that one of the A5's will be right in front of the blinds and since the table isnt all that deep anyways, this means it will basically just be sitting right in the middle of the table.
For the subwoofer, there are a few other options assuming I keep the A5's in one place. I can keep it where it is and attempt to do something baout the vibration/resonance issues that are affecting bass speed. I can put it on TOP of the black desk and point it at my head but I dont know what this will do for the vibrations that get transfered to the table. I can put it underneath the mirror which is opposite the black table, or I can put it inside the closet. The inside closet idea means it might resonate even worse. The under mirror idea means I'll have to do some weird fancy cable running and make a custom cable for connecting to either the A5 or my gamma2 f++. The on top of table idea sounds the best to me, though it will be rather imposing looking because that will also mean that I can keep the subwoofer at a lower gain and not piss off everyone in the house.
