Mainly For Sound ($400 or Less)

I just signed up to ask a question. I've been a Forum user for other things before, so I know the question of "which earphones should I buy" has been asked a million times before. That said, I thought I'd throw out some specifics and see if I could get some help. I would greatly appreciate it!

I love to make music as much as I do listening to it. I use Ableton Live 8 on a Macbook Pro (one model before the current body style), and I'm looking for a great sound. I'd say most of my current projects are beats (hip hop), but I love most genres of music (except newer/non-old-school country). Ideally, I would love a pair of earphones that has kick when I need it, but doesn't sacrifice the intricacy of a melody. I would also like something that can be loud if I need it to be. I hate feeling like I have to press headphones into my face just to hear a part of a song I'm trying to pick out.

I had a friend who let me hear a pair of lower-end Grado headphones one time, and I was impressed with the clarity of the classical track I was hearing. I've also sampled the notoriously cheaply-made Beats By Dre, which honestly seemed to have pretty good bass but seem a bit gimmicky to me. My last pair were AKG K240 Studio, which I had a warranty on but got the run-around from until the warranty expired. They also never seemed to retain enough sound to give me the volume I wanted. I like comfort as much as the next guy, but unless there is a pair that is known for causing so much discomfort it almost seems intentional, I'm mostly just concerned with sound. Both in music-making and in recreational listening. Ideally under $300, but I'd be able to do as much as $400. Whatever comes closes within the price range, but if there is something that is "perfect" and more expensive, I'd like to know about it to so I can lust after it until I can afford it.

Does this pair of headphones exist?!

K240 really need an amp.

With your price range you can have many excellent headphone.

What is your type of music? type of headphone, closed or open?

My type of music would mainly be hip hop...but I honestly would say I listen to as much classical and jazz. Overall though, definitely hip hop. I specifically want to hear the details of the music I create with Ableton.

I'd say I prefer closed, but I don't want to pretend I am an expert on the subject by any means. I didn't even know my AKGs needed an amp. I'm not even sure how to use an amp specifically for headphones. I just know sound, and I have only known to put that responsibility on the headphones themselves. I say "closed" because I want to be able to hear as much of the music as possible. If I'm under the wrong impression, please let me know.

Lot of AKG need an amp, like HD2.. series, K/Q series... and many others.

HD600/HD650 are excellent headphone (jazz, classical..., not really hiphop)  but if you haven't a amp, I can't recommend them to you.

Ultrasones, Audio technica, Grado, shure... are generally easy to drive without amp.

Maybe you can look for : SRH840, Hfi780, HFi580, Pro900, Pro2900, XB1000... headphones with bass emphasized but still very good with all frequencies.

The best in the list is pro2900 (for your taste), excellent all rounder, Hfi780 is very good too, but HFi580 ll be maybe better for HipHop.

There are also many others headphones for your taste that i haven't mentioned, but i speak only of headphones that i know.

Update: Out of anxiousness and excitement of actually getting a pair and having received advice...I ended up ordering HFI580 today. Sorry it took me so long to respond. Thanks for the help, man. I'll let you know how I like them. :-D
